fusing 2 maples Empty fusing 2 maples

i have a question and can't find the answer anywhere on the web..

i have 2 Acer P. Deshoyo
1 larger (about 45cm high, trunk at base 5cm)
1 smaller (about 27cm high, trink at base 2,5cm)

both are trained seperately but both have their "flaws"

i was now wondering if i could "fuse" the 2 trees in order to create 1 double-trunk bonsai.
can it be done? would it be done like an aproach graft (but leaving the roots afterwards)?
what would be the succesrate?
when would be the best time to do this?

try searching under fused trunks or blended trunks...

i have been successful with a korean hornbeam (from whips)

i also have a couple of ficus that look like the fusing is taking

and am hoping to be successful (by this year or next) with 5 dawn redwoods bound together...

i believe there are some threads on this forum on blending/fusing

thanks for your replies, but i'm not looking to fuse 100 seedlings into a bonsai.. i'm looking to merge 2 older trees into one.. including root system..

thats what i did with the ficus...
older material not seedlings

granted ficus is different than maple

and regardless of age, just bind them together with matching parallel sides as close as to a tight fit as possible, then plant them together and wait...

and wait... Wink

happens all the time in nature

(pics might help to know if they are "marriage material")

Yup tape em up tight and wait. I have a few red acers taped up. Not fused yet but they've only had one season together and they're pretty slow growing. I hope bybthe end of this summer I'll have some fuse. I have Some Chinese elms fused is a few spots after just last year's growth. Only reason I found out was lack of patience I couldn't wait and had to check last fall. Is say do it. And lace em up tight with raffa and the black vinyl tape and feed and wait and feed and wait

another binding option is wide double sided velcro tape...

"velcro" brand actually makes a garden tape that works really well...

and as a bonus it also comes in PINK !!! Rolling Eyes Razz

also makes checking on progress easier.

Why? Cut the roots hard on one side of each tree, stick 'em close together in a container and forget them for about ten years..... Sleep
How long have you been growing in containers?

they are both bought 2 and 4 years ago in a bonsai nursery.

was not planning anything to fuse them, but was just wondering about this, since together they would make a much better tree than they would separately..

ah well.. i'll just train them as they are and look out to buy a naturally grown double-trunk..

the trees in question:

the small one:

the bigger one (with 2 thread grafts):

If you think they compliment each other, maybe try a small group of three, the third tree being a cutting from one of them. or maybe just plant the two together, its a common occurrence in nature.

not a bad idea.. might even pick up 1 or 3 other acers at the nursery to make a group planting out of them..

might even mix some different japanese maple variants to create a different autumn color
