Re: Another ID Question
Hello Iris - I hope your holidays are progressing nicely!
I think you are on the right track with barberry, Berberis. Have you already ruled that out? The fruit shape, spines, and fruiting in the axils sure looks like a Berberis to me. Berberis julianae looks similar to yours but its leaves are much more sharply toothed. I am not that familiar with the temperate barberries so I hope someone else will recognize it. I agree with you that this is not Pyracantha.

Another ID Question
Since we started here & you folks already have the picture, I would like to discuss styling. At present, as my mother would say, nisht geshtoygen; nisht gefloygen (it doesn't stand; it doesn't fly). I could straighten the trunk more upright to a tree with three main branches or trunks. However, I don't think it would be very graceful, and it would take years to look like anything. My choice would be to bury the trunk and make it a three trunk raft clump style, which would be more like its natural habit. The trunk still has a little give, so I might curve it a bit, so the three stems are not in a straight line. Either way, I would remove the other very small stems. Any other suggestions?

Iris, if you look carefully, I think those berries are on a short twig which was just stuck in the soil. Try lifting it. The tree is a Pyracantha.

Hah! You're right. Why would anyone do that?
Anyway, Bill, can you comment on my styling idea? It would work just as well with a Pyracantha.

The vendor probably wanted to indicate, to you, which colour berries your plant will eventually have.
