The practice of Bonsai is split into two,

[a ] Horticulture - keeping the tree / shrub health [ may take 3 to 5 years if done with focus/love/interest daily - can also take longer ]

[b ] Design - the tree's shape which changes ever so often. [ depends entirely on the individual ]

Most run after the trunk, which requires most of the time - ground growing which is 3 to 5 years, if you know what you are doing.

Impatience - which leads to purchasing most often a mallsai, or some nursery plant.

It would probably make more sense to find a teacher and apprentice yourself, or pay for lessons.
It's pretty much a hand's on hobby.

******Never practice on the mother plant, take cuttings, practice on them.*****
____________________________________________________________________________

Soil, try to stay with just 1 or 2 or 3 ingredients. KISS - keep it simple soldier [ or stupid ]

If you stay totally inorganic, read up on Hydroponics and the fertilisers to use.

Try to stay away from hoses, you need to get familiar with your trees and you should have at least 10/20 victims. Better yet 300.
If you must use a hose, buy a head that works with 20lbs of pressure and falls like rain.
There is a design that has a block built into the internal of the head. It forces the water to first fill the head and them spray out.
Gentle watering, 3 passes with around 5 minute intervals.

Watering can, no heavier than 10 lbs in water and make sure the head/rose falls as gentle rain.

Fertiliser and fertilising - ask how to use first, from an experienced person.

Design - hmm, I suggest some form of Art Class or Sculpture class. Suggest.

Above all else be sincere in your Hobby.

Yes.

BTW, I also use the acronym "KISS" with my students, I tell them to use the KISS method: Keep It Super Simple! Although I deeply respect soldiers. Some of our club members are in the army, and our "venerable" is a former officer. It helped me overcome my teenage anti-militarism, yet we're not in the army in our school, I admit that I will never be able to get rid of my Rabelaisian influences Cool

Keep it simple, stupid.

or

keep it simple sh!the@d, if it's adults only.

is what I learned, and it's pretty good advice generally.

Soil and fertilizer is dependent climate, time of year and type of plant,, period. I guess it all depends on what works in your general area and the health of your BONSAI.

no matter where you are, mike, there is no reason to over complicate what doesnt need to be over complicated because there are enough other complicated factors in this BONSAI endeavor, not to mention the complicated complications of life in general...

kinda like that sentence Wink Razz Wink

Kevin,

Mike only has 4 posts and might never have read at IBC before, he may not understand your sense of humor.
Plus, he may have a wealth of experience in Bonsai.
Perhaps you can entice him to share.
He does seem to be older than both of us.

Even when I lived in Philadelphia, I used the idea that all plants use leaf mold and at the area where the mold touched the earth, it would be compost.
Any biters ?

khai...
mike is a good friend of mine and a fellow AAC member here in milwaukee...
also my travelling partner when we went to the 2015 carolina bonsai expo
(he is in my pictures under the carolina arboretum thread)

and if you wish to entice him to share, i would advise you to be careful what you wish for... Wink
mike is an absolute FOUNTAIN of knowledge on many many subjects, bonsai not the least of them...
and he either gives you the full monty (as in monologue) or something short and cryptic (as above) to make you think...

you see, we understand each other very well indeed !
