Hello,

today I would like to introduce for the first time one of my trees, a pomegranate (Punica granatum).

The tree is a seedling which my woman sowed about 8 years ago..
After he might grow 5 years freely (in a big pot) - it should become originally not a bonsai - she wanted him no more, because he looked to her too much after a bush.

Then, 3 years ago, I got the punica under my wings, he was cut first of all and repotted, then I let him grow, cut again, fertilized, cut, fertilized etc...
Here a small documentation of 2010 till this day.
Now the height is about 25 cms.

Punica granatum, seedling, 8 years Granat14
Punica granatum, seedling, 8 years Granat12
Punica granatum, seedling, 8 years Granat13

He did the biggest growth in the last 12 months, I think.
The current pot is a little bit too big, but this can be changed fast.

I ask for your opinions, suggestions and criticism.

Greetings,
Christian

This tree is coming through very nicely. I think you should now start focusing on branch selection and ramification. How is the nebari (I can barely tell from the last picture).

Beautiful work! I see the sacrifice branch grown out in the third picture, and can appreciate the (visible) level of expertise you've brought to developing this tree. Smile
You've got a nice Bonsai tree from what I can see in the last picture. Would like to see more views of the tree before I can offer any usable critique. Maybe even a top-down view? But, for starters, I believe a shallow oval pot with approximately the same length dimension as the pot its in now, would someday be nice one for this tree. Pomegranete's look good in off-white. With the visible scarring on the trunk I see on your tree, it looks a little less refined and more wild. To complement that look, maybe it would look best in a more unique type of less refined pot, with perhaps a cracked glaze?

Great progression. How long are the growing seasons where you live? Seems like a quick progression, but maybe that's the norm for the species.

Thanks for your comments, suggestions and questions.

@aman
The Nebari is about 4.5 cms.

@Auballagh
I will soon take another photos, also from above, then you can evaluate the tree better.
As I mentioned, I find the pot still too big, but I'm just going to make a new one.

@KennedyMarx
I live in Austria and in Germany, but the pomegranate is in Vienna (Austria).
The growing season goes from March to October, but in the wintertime, I put my plants in a cold greenhouse. For a short time, minus degrees are unproblematic, I also have lemon trees there.

But I guess, my pomegranate has good genes and grows really fast. It can be an exception, because I also have other pomegranates, but they do not grow so quickly.

Wow! You had a good pomegranate in a very few time! Moreover, I think it's a small-leaf pomegranate. Isn't it?

Congratulations! Very Happy

Hi Ireneu,

thanks for the congratulations.
I do not think that it is a small-leafy pomegranate.
Since the first four years, he might freely grow and the leaves were large, as it has a normal pomegranate.

Hi Rasti,
I like your Punica very much. I also have one Nejikan. But yours show a good development.
Tell me, how much pairs os leaves you let it grow before cut them?

Hello Rui,

In this year the spring was long, cold and wet. Therefore the development of my pomegranate is not the optimum.

Normally I cut two, three weeks earlier.

Here the pictures.
Before the cut...

... and 10 seconds later...

I repeat this procedure 3-4 times in the year.

Hello,

here an update of my little punica, now, finally, without leaves:
Punica granatum, seedling, 8 years Granat12

And here the direct comparison from March 2013 to December 2013:
Punica granatum, seedling, 8 years Vergle10

I do not think, that the pot is too big, maybe it is a little bit too high.
But in the spring I make a new pot.

Many greetings,
Christian

great evolution, beautiful tree, wrong pot sorry.
Def. to deep and large in comparison with the trunk. maybe a lighter color would also be better.
But did I say great evolution?! Wink

you've done a great job developing this tree! perhaps scrub the nebari with a toothbrush to distinguish it from the soil a bit more

Enjoyed your progression...Job well done! Dont you think second primary branch on the left has too many branches coming from the same spot, which makes it look like reverse taper is starting?

classic looking tree in a classic style, but understated nicely...

i agree with neli, but it is hidden well in bloom, and not so much in silhouette, but still.... nice tree.

Hi Neli,
hi Kevin,

you're both right, but the tree has developed strongly in this year.
For a better evaluation, I will shoot photos without leaves.
In about a month all the leaves are gone ...
