Azaela digging Empty Azaela digging

Post  brian soldano Mon Oct 26, 2015 12:17 am

I have a chance to dig some rather large azaela shrubs that have been kept trimmed over the years. My question is when should to start digging. Everything I seem to read contradicts one another.. Do I go shovel prune the larger roots now and go back in the spring and lift it. Or like most of what I read says to collect or transplant in the fall. I trust most of you guys here over random internet write ups. Please help

Brian, I have little experience in your area but even here in the South I would always choose to wait until Spring to dig if that is an option. I would think that would be even more important in your area.

We've dug a bunch of azaleas here in th eMId-Atlantic. Dig right before they start to move. I've dug them in full flower without problems.

They normally transplant well.

Good luck.

They normally transplant well.

Yes.  And their roots tend not to stray too far from the center line, so you don't need to take up a massive root ball.  I too would wait until early spring.

I will add my thanks, too. I have an azalea I dug from a flower bed two years ago (in Spring) and transplanted to a growing bed. It was not doing well in its original location, but thrived in the new one. I was planning to lift it to a pot next Spring, and your posts have reassured me that is the right time.
