I have been looking for a new project to start. I am wanting to try my hand at a wind swept tree. What is the best type of tree for this particular style? I am in Texas zone 8.

Very tough to do. I would use a tree that will grow in your area first. Then look for one that has most of its branches growing from one side.

For inspiration: https://www.google.com/search?q=windswept+bonsai&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAWoVChMI8qzv6YTlxwIVhBk-Ch1QMwXz&biw=1280&bih=582&dpr=1.25

It is true that making an effective, realistic windswept tree is among the more difficult bonsai tasks, those pics sshould tell you it is possible -- and give you a sense of which plants to choose. BUT, if you choose a broad leafed plant (evergreen or deciduous) chose one whose leaves do not have long petioles.
