I have had this tree for about 3 years now and recently displayed it at our local bonsai show. Any body else out there trying one?

Mike

There is an old one on my cousins' farm in MI, growth habit reminds me of honeysuckle. If know some have.made good bonsai out of honeysuckle, but for me personally, it's growth habit is a problem. So I never thought to try kolkwitzia. Yours is nice, and after 4 years it looks very similar, with some additional ramification. A good testimony to your horticultural & bonsai skills. Have you ever gotten it to flower for you?

Yes it does flower, there are tiny pink Lily of the Valley style flowers and they smell really nice. If you go to my website you can see a better photo of the tree. The tree is currently producing flower buds which look like some small frilly looking thing in the photo's. The tree will be going down to the Denver Botanic Garden Bonsai Pavilion when it starts blooming.

Right now it is in the garage for a few days because it is suppose to drop to 25 degrees and snow!!! I have spent the last 2 days moving trees back into the garage. Life in the high desert plains of Western America.

Its amazing how much better the tree is doing in its new location, raccoons kept climbing over it and smashing it down. Not the case anymore.

Don't know the species at all, but if you can get any more movement into the long trunk you should try. The ramification is great, and overall I would like to see the tree emphasise a slender snaking effect, both downwards and side to side.
