Very first Bonsai

Hi Team l have only just started my Bonsai life after many years of being an horticultural fan My question is ,l have available at the bottom of my garden an Oak tree l inherited from the previous home owner .Not sure of its age but it is about 3mtrs high with a trunk base girth of 6 inch, i would like to dig this up and try this as a pre bonsai project.The tree has a lot of top growth and at two feet from the base has 6 healthy branches What would you do? would you sever the tree at this height whilst still in leaf or wait till the Autumn and uproot it then Advice from a member would be appreciated many thanks

The team would probably need a few images to help you.

If possible use a sheet of white bristol board to isolate the tree from the garden.

Hard for us to tell without photos. However the best thing is to join a bonsai club, if possible, and learn from experienced members.

(English oaks, if that's what it is, are used for bonsai. My reading indicates that collecting Quercus robur is a bit tricky)

There are probably easier species with which you can start your bonsai journey. Two that come to mind are hedge maples and Chinese elms, very vigorous and make nice bonsai.

Oaks are tough to collect from the wild. At least the ones around here are. They don't like to have their roots fooled with. Well root. They usually only have a tap root with little feeders coming off of the sides. The ones here are useless for bonsai anyway. Big leaves and long internodes and petioles. But they can take a signifigantly reduction in height.
