Alberta Spruce Empty Alberta Spruce

Post  nigel14 Thu Jun 11, 2015 8:59 pm

I bought a stock Alberta Spruce from Walmart. It's about 2 feet high. I was told not to prune or repot it until late fall. I need to know how and what to use for fertilization until then. It gets hot here in Kansas, and I'd like to know that if I can't pot it or prune it, can I begin to wire it? After the repotting, I'll be on here to ask about styling ideas. Thanks for any responses.

I'm not at all sure why you were told not to prune. If the tree is healthy, I'd think that would be OK.

Any fertilizer sold by WalMart's garden section will be fine.

This is the time to prune a spruce. It will have time to heal. The repot, wait until spring just as the buds swell. Only remove 1/3 of the roots and don't bare root it. Gradually over a period of a few years work out the old soil and replace with bonsai soil. If you want to try to get it to back bud, once the new growth is just starting to harden off cut back the new shoot back to a couple of needles.
These trees look like they should be a shoe in for bonsai. But they are a touch difficult. Getting branches to hold their shape is a never ending battle. And surprisingly enough even they say Alberta spruce the winters here lately have been too much for a lot of these in the landscape. Winter burn. Go figure.
