Question about seeds and planting Empty Question about seeds and planting

Post  toorop Sat Apr 25, 2015 7:48 pm

Hello everybody! Smile

So, I'm in process of ordering seeds to grow my bonsai trees. Here in Croatia is spring currently and I'm about to get the seeds in two weeks, so can I plant them then? (I know that autumn is the best time for seeding). Can I plant seeds in the some basic pot and then transfer them into ground in my garden?  How much seed of every species do I need?
...
I'm 18 and I have time on my hand. The plan is to buy Pinus Aristata, Pinus thunbergii, Japanese Cedar and Japanese Red Maple and plant them into ground and feed them heavily and let them grow for a year or two and then put them in some plastic pot to make the inital style ect.

Thank you Smile

Enjoy. It'll probably take more than a "year r two" to be able to do any real styling on them -- especially the conifers.

Can seedlings live/survive in some shade? They will have full sun from 12:00 to somewhere around 16:00(4pm) and after that, it'll be in some shade? Here's shade http://prntscr.com/72oq2r

it is a bad time to order seeds, most will need stratification for 3 months or so, so you will be sawing in the fall which is not good.

If you are in croatia you have the chance to get yourself one of these great oriental hornbeams they grow a lot there, very tough trees from what I read

Yes you can sow them (it is sow not saw sorry for the typo) in spring but don't start stratification before fall then...

good luck

Actually. I would just plant all the seed now. A good percentage of the pines will will come up right away, and more will germinate the following spring. Maple seed, if fresh off the tree and still moist will germinate right away. If maple seed is dry, it will need a warm stratification for three months, followed by a 3 month cold stratification. Dry maple seed planted spring or summer of 2015 will germinate in 2016. This is a double dormancy and is common with maples, carpinus, Ilex, and a number of other species. Japanese white pines and related P. aristata will also exhibit this were some seed will germinate right away, and some will sprout the following year.

Thanks for advice! I've planted all of my seeds already, I'll sow last pack of seeds tommorow! Smile I'm living in a dream where atleast some of them will germinate and start growing this spring/summer Sad I really hope some of them will.. Sad

noob question; Do I need to water everyday the place where the seeds are sown?   edit: I mean, as soon as I see that the ground is dry, I water it, that's once a day, maybe twice..

:(I need atleast one tree to start growing Sad

Electrons are cheap, no harm in starting a separate thread for the Picea. When many growers see the word ''seed'' in a thread title, if they know nothing about seed growing, they will move along without opening the seed thread, so many of the Spruce experts won't see a spruce question in a ''bonsai from seeds'' thread. I know little about spruce, but just saw I have many Pinus rigida, Pinus lambertina, and Pinus virginiana seeds sprouting this week. (Pitch pine, sugar pine, and Virginia pine). Last year's Pinus bungeana (lacebark pine) seedlings looking like they are beginning to push new growth.

Can not help you with the spruce, I don't know much about them yet. I have only had a spruce (Picea) since autumn of 2014.
