Serissa flowers changed color?

Post  SerissaPanda on Sun May 10, 2015 3:19 am

Hello,

I bought a lovely little snow rose serissa bonsai at a street fair a few months ago, and recently the flowers have changed color! When I bought it, and for a few weeks afterwards, the flowers were all that pale pinkish-purple color, blooming from rather deep purple buds. But, in the last couple of weeks, there are fewer flowers, and they are all pure white (and the buds, before they open, are now green instead of purple)! This is the single flower variety, with solid green (rather than variegated) leaves, if that matters.

I've never had a serissa (or any bonsai, actually) before, so I was just wondering if this was normal, or if it was a sign that something is wrong with the plant? It seems otherwise healthy -- no dropping of leaves, putting out a little new growth, what roots I can see look fine. Is this normal for a serissa to do, or is there a way to get that pretty pink back?

Thanks!

Perfectly normal, flower color is influenced by light levels and temperatures. Warmer temps, pale flowers. Low light levels will also give you less color in the flowers. This is perfectly normal.

Watch your new growth, if there are long distances between leaves on the stems, compared to older growth, you will need to move your tree to a spot with more light. Serissa can take full sun when grown outdoors, though they grow reasonably well in part shade. Indoors, put them in the brightest window you have.

Oh, thank you! I was a little worried the move had given my poor plant some sort of identity crisis. Wink I'll try moving it closer to the window, and hopefully the complex will turn the air conditioning on soon, so it won't be so ungodly hot in this place. With any luck, maybe the next time it blooms the pink will come back to the flowers!

Most likely you will have pink flowers in winter, it will be cooler on the window sill, and white flowers in the warmer months.
