Wow man. Very nice work (both JMs and the white pine). There's nothing preventing these from becoming GREAT trees.
Question about this one: It looks like you went with thread-leaf palmatum for foliage. Did you start cuttings for the grafts or did you have a 'mother plant' in close proximity and brought the shoots over for the approach grafts?

That is the foliage of 'Koto no Ito' - loosely, golden harp strings (fall color).

And, I agree, VERY NICE WORK!

So the foliage disparity between the 1st photo and the last is the time of year? The grafts came from the same tree and done for placement then?

Never thought any tree would survive such a massive root reduction. How is it even possible for the tree to stay alive? Can I ask you if you did extra stuff, like feeding it root hormone (forgive me) to keep it alive?

Sweet tree by the way!

mikeyeye,

The plant i used was a  Koto no ito  which  i bought in a garden center abouth 10 years ago.
It was ented on a normal green Acer palmatum rootstock when i bought it.
After 10 years as a garden solitaire maple.......i could not resist.......to make it to something smaller.. ;-)

The leaves you see in the first pics. are the normal Koto no ito leaves......and yes the're bigger and almost look like the normal acer palmatum leves (but a little more narrow)

When you cut a koto no ito drastic......the leaves of the first year new growt will always be much bigger as the ones wich appear in the second year's growt...and that why you see the difference between both pics. the first pics were made in first yaer after a drastic cut, the last pics are recent.

The graftings you see are not from another plant.....

I did not use hormone powder on this one.....but i also made a layer on a bigger twig of one of my sango kaku garden mapels were i did use the powder in combination with sphagnum moss.......(lets see the difference in a few months..  ;-)

The layering (ring of bark) was removed below the point were the Original ent was made when this maple started his life :-) so roots will Always be acer palmatum ..

I only used akadama arround the layer..
..

Very impressive, and a great idea to use 'Koto-no-ito' for bonsai.

Congrats.
