Howzit Guys,

A friend told me that someone was selling some of there bonsai's here on Maui because they could not keep up with them. So I went down to take a look and this is what I bought.

There's something about roots that I like that always attracts me to them. Twisted Evil

Nice find. Willow Leaf is one of my favorite species. There are lots of examples of mine on my blog.

If it were mine I would take the plunge and make the major changes now to have a much better tree in the future. The image shows what I would do. Remove the right upright branch and have only one leader. Cut the top back very hard. Either cut or wire the first branch on the left to make i more horizontal. I'd cut more roots and pot it lower in the pot and move it closer to the right side of the pot.

Good luck.

Much Mahalo Rob,

Looks like a good plan. ThumbsUp Also, I have a problem with where to set the tree in the pot. After I do it, it seems to be off somehow. Is there a rule I should follow?

Well, you generally put the tree in off-center so there's more pot under any lean than on the other side.

I agree with Rob's suggestions -- especially planting it deeper in the soil. You are lucky that you have a 365 day growing season. Even Rob doesn in S. central Florida doesn't have that.

Howzit Jim,

It's nice to have a long growing season but we can't grow deciduous trees here. I would love to have Japanese Cherries, maples etc. Sad Oh well, thats the price you pay for paradise.

Tim,
I've included a graphic that illustrates where trees should be planted in their pots. This basically mirrors what is in John Naka's book, "Bonsai Techniques I".

A bit of extra info, the square pot is not displayed flat side forward. Although you could do that, it's more attractive with a corner forward.

Hope this helps.

Mahalo Ed for the information. ThumbsUp
I like the idea about the square pot. I would never thought of looking at it that way. Now to find a tree to do that. Laughing

Howzit Guys,
I went in and made some adjustments. I took off that one branch to the far right. On the other right hand branch I made an wedge excision on the bottom of the branch and used a 6.0mm wire to move it more to the right. On the lower left hand branch I made two wedge excision, one on the bottom of the branch and the second half way up the branch and again used a 6.0mm wire. With all of your Kukua (Help) it's starting to look much better.

Aloha, Brudda Tim!
I like Rob's plans and what you did so far. Looks good!
I've done major chops on some of my W-Leaf Ficus' as well.
The new growth offers so many new options.

I think that a couple of years is enough time to replicate what Rob has drawn out for you if that's the direction you are going in. These things grow pretty fast, and in your climate, even faster.

You know it's funny, part of me likes the way it looks and part of me says "Go For It!!". I'm sure we all come to that crossroads before one time or another with our trees. Confused But I do need to get some garden pot for the branch cuttings.

Cutting take real easy with ficus. I would put them in something where they can stay for a year at least. Terracotta pots is what I try to use if I have them. If not, then plastic pots will do. Once they take you want them to grow unrestrained. That means roots too.
