World Bonsai Day 2015 Empty World Bonsai Day 2015

Post  Chris Cochrane Mon May 11, 2015 4:41 pm

As it does each year, World Bonsai Day occurred this past Saturday (second Tuesday in May).   Hopefully, IBC enthusiasts participated & contributed.

An excerpt from Saburo Kato's Bonsai no kokoro ("Spirit/heart of bonsai") speech in 1980 seems especially fitting when facing difficulties. It is especially fitting on the World Bonsai Friendship Federation's World Bonsai Day honoring Mr. Kato. We feel similarly about friendship through bonsai & stone appreciation, & we should never hesitate to express it.  From a slightly edited 2011 post on the IBC Stone Forum...

Everyone here has gathered together from distant places. In each of your countries you have mountains, rivers, woods and forests. These are beautiful scenes to inspire you. Choose the most beautiful examples for your bonsai. Do not just copy anything. Rather, make your bonsai like the best parts of nature.

To raise bonsai it is very important to learn the strong and weak points of each plant. Raising bonsai is like raising children. Be a teacher and a guide but with patience and loving care. Treat your plants as you do your family. I'm sure that each of you will also be able to create and grow beautiful bonsai.

Bonsai is a living thing in the roots and even in the leaves. Every day that you are attending your bonsai, although the plant cannot speak to you, you'll sense that the plant is trying to tell you something. You'll one day know a plant is asking for water or fertilizer. When you come to that stage, you'll have developed a close bond. Bonsai responds to your love and becomes like honest friends with no human falsehood or betrayals.

Bonsai are loyal if you water and fertilize regularly with loving care. Life is more meaningful when we attend these little plants. We learn the essence and dignity of life! Even the life of a bonsai is older than us. So bonsai must be passed on to the next generation to preserve the life in the tray. This is important.

Bonsai is a god-given gift to man. This form of nature is closest to man and portrays the drama of life. Bonsai is nature without an end. So those who grow bonsai have a responsibility to be diligent and a duty to continue to carry on. In conclusion, I hope that the art of bonsai will never die and will keep the torch of peace burning throughout the world. I hope closer and deeper friendships will tie us together.

Maybe next year someone can give us some advanced notice about WBD; we perhaps could have devised something for IBC participation.

Here locally, the only other bonsai grower in Polk County NC and I got together and worked on some nice trees. It was 100% serendipity, however.

The Knoxville club had our spring show on Saturday, we were informed later that evening of the coincident.

Chris, thanks for reviving the excerpt from Mr. Kato's speech. It reminds of the mystical aspect of bonsai.

Well, if it's not one of the "special days" that come already printed on my 13-month wall calendar -- the one that runs my life -- I tend to not know about it.

Nope. But after 55 years, June 11 is pretty firmly hardwired into my head.

Great Knoxville show. There were some really nice trees. I forgot that live trees look so much better than pictures of trees.

Thanks.

World Bonsai Day 2015 was celebrated at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington DC.    As noted by NBF's Executive Director shared:

I know Rosade Bonsai Studio in New Hope PA had broad events on May 9th, which were described in the Studio's newsletter "Bonsai no Satori"-- LINKED HERE.  There was an open house with a discount on everything.  The Studio's new intern Mauro Bocchieri (recommended by Salvatori Liporace) demonstrated development of a recently dug juniper.  Chase Rosade offered bonsai consultation all-day.  Young Choe displayed kusamono, Steve Miller did bonsai sketches and Wabi Kai arranged several spring displays.  NABF Chair Soli Rosade (along with Joanne) offered to pot bonsai for any child that visited.

World Bonsai Day 2015 was celebrated at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington DC.    NBF's Executive Director Johann Klodzen shared:

Because there is no (Potomac Bonsai Association) Bonsai Festival this year, due to the scheduling of the American Bonsai Society’s Learning Symposium in June, it was decided to expand the events on World Bonsai Day.  As in the past, there will be a special display devoted to Saburo Kato in the Tokonoma, Jack Sustic will lead several scheduled tours of the collections and there will be demonstrations by the intern Danny Coffey and NBF Director and Museum volunteer, Joe Gutierrez.  In addition, this year there will be three vendors.:  Meehan’s Miniatures will be selling bonsai, Johann will sell logo World Bonsai T-shirts for NBF and Sandy Moore, the author of the new children’s book on the Yamaki pine will be autographing and selling the book.  A food vendor will also be on hand.
