Flowering Quince Empty Flowering Quince

It is supposed to get down into the single digits (F) tonight and tomorrow night, so I have 4-5 trees inside -- a couple of newly potted juniper and two of these and one Japanese red quince PRE-bonsai. They are tough, but I lost the flowers last tear as would just as soon not this year.

Thanks for sharing Jim. Your typo of tear instead of year was very appropriate. Nice little tree and I really like the color of the pot. Stay warm I hope my guys survive our single digits under their blankets of pine straw. 50s in day and then teens or lower at night. UGH.

Thanks and sorry for the typo.  My shaky fingers no longer hit the keys i want them to hit.

That's one of my favorite little pots.  It in actuality is a run-of-the-mill unglazed, brown Japanese pot (6 inches).  It was Dale Cochoy's; he dipped it in some red glaze and re-fired it.  I picked it up from him at some show or the other a few years ago.

That is a really nice White Chojubai. My leafed out Red Chojubai is now inside because tonight and tomorrow night temperatures will go down to negative single F.

Yeah. Lost power for several hours last night (high winds), screwing up my 02 supply. Long night. Ice storm predicted Monday night and Tuesday a.m. 3 inches of ice accumulation prediction, so more and longer outages. I'm too old for this!

Thanks for the nice words on the little tree.

Jim,

Very nice, I love flowering quince.

We are supposed to get 7" inches plus of snow tonight. I am glad for my trees, they need the insulation from the Arctic air here on the east coast.

Best regards, can't wait for Spring!

jim... at our working meeting of the AAC yesterday, one of our guys was working on a stunning little quince, very similar in form to yours...

very nice !

btw - anyone have a generator you can borrow (if you dont have one) ?
power outages can be devastating to those who's well being (not just comfort) depend on having electricity.

my neighbor has one and last time we lost power for an extended period, he was running it up and down the block giving a shot to those in medical need... needless to say, he's a good neighbor.

On the windswept, Thanks.  This isn't the most flattering angle I could have photographed from.  Oh well.   The pot is more than "interesting."  It's a bit odd.  Six slab sides.  Made by one of a pair of sister potters in Boone or Blowing Rock, NC; I misremember their names.  My son found it for me about 10-15 years ago.  I'd like to find the gal's name again.  She told him she made 3-4 bonsai pots a year.

I've had a difficult time finding plants that "fit" the pot.  That's what happens when you don't choose your own pot.  This tree comes as close as any, I guess. It needs to be planted a wee bit deeper.

Great on the O2 refill, and nice to see those blossoms! Kinda pushes the winter shadows away.

Jim, I love both quinces, and their pots too. That hexagonal pot is really nice, but like you said, you have to grow a tree to fit the pot. The windswept quince is actually a nice match for the pot.

I'm glad to see varieties other than just Chojubai red being used. Don't get me wrong, I love Chojubai, but there are many very bonsai worthy flowering quince varieties. I'm hoping my 'Hime' and 'Kan Toyo' will flower this spring. My Chojubai got forgotten, and dried out crispy, but I watered it as soon as I noticed, a flush of a few leaves low, but definitely lost all flowers for this year.

I have a number of pots I am trying to grow trees to fit.  Isn't it they way it is supposed to be done?
I have more pots than trees, and keep on collecting more. At least the pots don't die if you forget to water.

So nice!
I wish I will be able to train my first Chaenomeles properly to look like a decent small bonsai.
Leo, at least you didn't loose the tree and that's good.

I definitely am not the one to say the way things are supposed to be done, but I am thinking since bonsai means a tree in a tray, bonsai is a unity of tree and pot hence we should design our bonsai trees in relation to the appropriate pot right from the very begining. This is what I have been tought by Mr. P. Warren who was invited artist by our bonsai club. In this context, I believe you are doing the same Leo.
