Repotting Larch Empty Repotting Larch

I have a Larch I bought at a Wisconsin nursery in the distressed tree section. I have allowed it to grow and recover for 3 years in its original 5 gal nursery pot. I know it needs to be repotted and was wondering if it is necessary to leave some soil around the roots as I have done with other conifers to retain the fungus cultures?

Certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to do. If you're using synthetic fertilizers the fungus does not assist in nutrient uptake. However if you go with organic fertilizers then the fungus will help the roots absorb the nutrients. others may disagree but this is just my stance on the whole fungus conversation after wondering the same thing.

Or you can inoculate the new soil with some of the old. My experience is that larch are a bit temperamental about root work and it may be less stressful to wash out the old soil than to remove it mechanically. I have been told and tend to agree that the best time to repot a larch is just as the buds start to show a green center. That said, I just reported a flat of 5 year old larch seedlings that were well beyond that point, but I stick to that bud greening stage when repotting more valuable trees.

Depends on the larch I guess. The American larch I have get barerooted at time of collection and then every repot also. I have read that the other models aren't as tough.
