Post  Guest Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:32 am

I think theese days are tough to go through, nowing how bad the situation is in Japan.

Yesterday Me and my husband decided to do something posetive anyway, and went on yamadori.
During the fall, I found a hedge near by, with two usefull trees...this is it first...I hope to collect the next one later today......I think I was very lucky, the owner gave me hes permission to dig them out...he will recive two bottles of nice redvine, for hes kindnes.
This tree had very nice surface roots.

Very nice find Yvonne. As for suggestions, I think your reduction is spot on for now. Field Maple have a strong habit of backbudding, so I would wait and see. The top section is a little cylindrical but when you have some new shoots to prune to, further reduction can go ahead.

Peter prepare to be invitet very soon, to dig up hawthorn forrestgroups....during the weekend, will I look at them, all 150....it will be a party, if they are, as I expect. I wil let you know.
Look at page 73, and 93 in the newest Bonsai Focus.....my hawthorns are born to this.

Hello,
Nor is it wise to put in a pot of culture greater than in a pot (bonsai)? scratch

Hello Ivonne,
Nice catch, acer campestre makes good and easy material for bonsai.
I repotted two of them yesterday, i dug them out of my hedge two seasons ago.
Here buds on them are already extending.
Good idea, that is waiting where the shoots will come, and they will come certain.

Hi Yvonne,

incase you want to reduce the height even further, you can do so as in the picture below.
Acer Campestre, yamadori Acer10

The red line indicates the cut and the green one indicates the new leader.. Guess this should do it.... What do you think??

Hello Ravi. Not sure this is a good idea at this stage. Waiting for budding will help with direction and future styling. Your red cut removes movement in the tree and also gives a monumental amount of work building taper and a new top.

Hi Will,

I fully agree with what you have said. Which is why I start off by saying "Incase you want to reduce the height even further". Actually Yvonne had also said something like "I may want to reduce the height a little more.." inher second post on this thread. Hence I suggested what I did Very Happy

Hi Smile

R@scal
Do you not like the small pot?...I do this all the time. I never loose a tree, I take very good care of my trees.

Sunip
Thanks for your information...this makes me looke even more forward to the years to come, with both my new campestres...I will send photos tomorrow of the newest, I have no more batteri in my camara now.

Rob
I have not planted theese trees.....the owner of the field planted them, and a lot of abies 20 years ago. After some years, they wanted cattle to graze the field, and all trees were removed, and the rootstump was afterwards removed completely dawn to the groundlevel....Now 5 years later the craetegus has grown up again, and is now betwen 50 - 80 cm . I expect them to be rootconnected...I will have a look very soon.
Now all the craetegus must be removed, as owner want to make a lake.
After I have taken, what I want....will I invite my danish friends to yamadoriparty...great fun.

Ravi
Thanks for your suggestion....it can be defficult to owerlook a tree on a photo...Will and my suggestion is the one, that will be working (hopefully) Smile

Kind regards Yvonne

Hi Yvonne

Nice find. I wonder how the root mass must have been like, since you dared reducing it to fit into such a shallow pot. You do this all the time you say, and with great success. But would you please describe how much of the root was remaining after reducing it prior to the potting? I ask this, because I have been prying around another acer campestre hedge for a possible digging and wonder how much root is needed for this species to thrive/survive.

best regards from

Thanks Marija...the best bottle, is for the lowest part of the tree Smile

Loke Emil...the tree was once a hedgeplant, plantet by people, so this one had the taproot turned up. Almost all manplantet trees has that. This make them a bit easier to collect.
What I need for the tree to have, is roots all the way arround, or at least under mainbranches...all branches need to have a supportroot. You can cut off the rest of the root ,under the last supporting root. The kept roots will ned to have a few feederroots too, after that, you can cut the rest off.
The reason why, I plant this new tree in a small pot now, is because, I much better can control the tree, and it will not suffer from part owerwatering....When the mainbranches is chosen, will I place it in a bigger pot, to speed up the growth.

Kind regards Yvonne

The second Campestre is not quit as nice, as the first......but we decided to dig it up anyway, because of the very nice old bark, especialy on the choosen front.
I would like to keep the tree tall, despite of the fat branch comming from the front. But I may ned to cut off the backpart, and keep the small tree, to have a OK neabari....insteadt off working for years, to kreate a better taper/neabari of the tall tree.

If the tree is seen from other sides, the neabari and taper is looking less god.
The heavyness of the forkpart, can be removed, with both designsolutions, but ofcourse with big scars.
Please...any suggestions ? Smile

Kind regards Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,

Your tree and location remind me nice autumn of 2007 - I spent it on the danish island of Mon.
I still have an "A.campestre yamadori location" there Smile I want to come back.
With the second tree - I would go for the left apex together with the thin second trunk on the left side of the base.

This is one of my plans...was it yours?

That´s one of my big dreams, to come back. I´d like to see Mons Klimt and other sightseeings again.
I´ll let You know, if my dreams come true.
I made a virtual for You. The crown is not perfect, too bonsai-like Smile.
But You can see - what I see in Your material.
