Been away researching and pondering

Post  Khaimraj Seepersad on Fri Oct 17, 2014 2:52 pm

Well I got all tied up in this - is it Art - philosophy, and where is the Internet really going.

For me as a Traditionally trained Fine Artist [ which is someone trained in the Oil Painting techniques that evolved from Da Vinci to Ingre, hand mulled paints ..... ], calling something Art, requires the ability of the Image to be contemplated.

I was happy to accept Fine Bonsai as a Fine Art, but Bonsai grow and outgrow designs. It does not have to be x hundred years old, just a design that truly captivates the mind.

Anyhow, I have stopped bothering with all of that because, unlike an Oil painting or Sculpture, which carries the creator's signature, for it's existance. To be remembered.
I shift here slightly.
My friend in China, suggested I not worry my pretty bald head about such matters, and sent me a book.
In that book, the work of a well known penjing Master [ dead ] now owned by others, carries their name as the creators of those Penjing.
Solved all my queries.

So it matters not if it is Art or Craft, as the tree carries on, the creator is forgotten.
Different philosophy for Fine Art [ oil painting as done with European standards.]
Thus there will be no more mumblings from my corner.

As to the Internet.
For whatever reason, the search is for ---------------------- free information.
I am not sure how long or how far that will go, but as a researcher, I will bow out of that race.
Until I find a way to show images, without Google locking onto them for 1/3 cent sales a click, I will not be showing anything.
No problems with the folk of IBC collecting images for self use, but not world search engines, making money.
Later.
Khaimraj

* I am very glad I grew up in a world with Land Lines, folk visiting to chat, friendship of over 45 years and libraries or book stores / second hand book shoppes, making things by hand and learning to draw what I can see well, then from memory being able to re-draw the big shapes.

Thanks for you posting. Evokes much thought.

I do have to respectively disagree with this statement!
"So it matters not if it is Art or Craft, as the tree carries on, the creator is forgotten."

In general you are probably correct, however there are some very notable exception. Here in the states whenever a forest by the name of Goshen is viewed -- everyone automatically fondly remembers the originating bonsai master - John Naka. So the creator is not always forgotten.

Thanks again.

Well . . . . it hasn't been THAT long. Give 'em time; folks these days can forget most anything.

i too disagree with this statement, for i have always felt that the difference between "art" and "craft" is that art can not and should not be duplicated, while crafts seem to be designed to be easily created, duplicated and done over and over again, whether it be by the original craftsperson or someone else... (i have had this theory for many years, but this is the first time ever putting it in writing...
and when i sit back and read it and re-read it, it appears to be as easy to pick apart as any other theory... oh well... semantics, shemantics)

but with respect to bonsai, i believe that if the tree was designed by someone, and it continues its life in that general design, then the original artists name should always be associated with it...

apart from famous trees like goshen, i believe that folks like arthur joura do a good job of carrying forward both the work and the original artist's name in plantings that have found their way to the NC arboretum... at least that is the impression i get from his posting on this forum.

however, if a tree eventually goes through a complete transformation, then perhaps the original artists name may be forgotten, and rightfully so as it is no longer their work or vision...

which brings me to "check-book bonsai artists", which is a term coined by one of our AAC members:

is there any other art form out there, where someone can purchase someone elses work and then almost immediately enter it into "the contest" and take home best of show ???

i gotta say, that really burns my ass...
