The forest on a slab is actually American Elm. I was astonished at the small leaves!
Anything lacking in the look of these trees is due to my 'developing' photographic skills.

Hi precarius,
Nice garden, looks like a beautiful place. Thanks for posting these, that maple sure is full! I'm wondering if you know what the next tree with the reddish bark is?

I had the sheet that listed and described them, then misplaced it. Embarassed The reddish bark is actually a coloring, I guess for display. Question I'm not sure I liked it much. If you look closely at back branches, you can see the natural color of the bark.

Its an azalea and it looks like someone cleaned and oiled the bark as you might a shimpaku.

yer gonna need elec-um-trick-city too if'n you gonna squirt 500 miles ! lol!

did you have a tree in there ?

also, if they are trees from the locals, are there any plans for a permanant exhibit ?

the reason i ask is that we here in the big city ( Rolling Eyes ) of milwaukee are currently in the design phases of a permanent exhibit at the lynden sculpture gardens ( http://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/ ), which is a perfect match...

this was an effort spearheaded by senior members of the milwaukee bonsai society (mbs) and propelled along with no small push from a very large $$$ donation from member jack douhitt ( http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/bonsai-jack-douthitt/1112508736?ean=9780847823208 ) and subsequently matched by, not only members, but visiting artists...

it would be cool as heck to see something like that in omaha
(which, despite my teasing, i still have an affinity for, having spent some of the darkest and brightest days of my life there)

Sounds like you'd have quite the story to tell over a drink in the Old Market. Well, as far as I know there are no such plans for a permanent display here. Milwaukee sounds like it's movin and groovin a little bit. Hope I get out there to check it out when it comes to fruition! Bagpiper

I'm curious, do you also have plans for ongoing classes? I would think such a display would generate some interest in taking part.

indeed... omaha was a great place to be a big fish in a small pond in the early 80's punk rock salad days Twisted Evil
and ah yes... the old market... drastic plastic, spaghetti works and of course, howard street tavern  drunken

but we digress...

actually MBS has a long history of on going educational programs, offering multi-session courses in novice, intermediate and advanced classes taught by the experienced members, along with many workshops throughout the year for everyone from total newbies to advanced workshops with the many internationally recognized artists who are regularly brought in, such as colin lewis, ted mattson, kathy shaner, suthin s., arthur joura, to name just a few i can think of off the top of my head, and all with-in the 2 years i have been a member...

many of those artists regard milwaukee's club as among the best in the nation for making education a priority for its members.

i believe the milwaukee club blows away the one of our ugly sister to the south.
(JOKING about the ugly sister part - lets not get up in arms chicagoians  Wink  )

i'm sure the permanant display will increase public awareness, but MBS also has a history of many yearly public shows, like state fair, harvest fair, the art museum, the annual show and exhibit at boerner botanical gardens, etc... (and our little sub club - arbor arts collective - is slowly breaking into the art show circuit)

back when i was driving back and forth, it was only 8 hours from omaha to milwaukee
probably less now, so lemme know if you plan to make a visit...

Based on the shot into the canopy, the owner of the bushy maple has a LOT of serious branch work to do over the winter -- lucky the winter is so danged long there in the backwoods!
