Betula pendula leaves curling and drying

Post  GerhardGerber on Thu Sep 25, 2014 4:33 pm

Hi

I need some help, my Silver Birch survived the no doubt way too hot winter, but the new leaves are curling up and drying out - pics attached.

Our friend Google couldn't help, so I'm hoping for some advice.

The soil looks VERY dry and looks also like it has NO organic component at all. Betula like damp feet.

Moving to pests

Hi Jim

In this case looks are deceiving, 100% inorganic but very retentive, if you just move it with a fingertip the moisture is obvious.

Hello Gerhard

Is there any reddish brown blotches on the stem?

The curling leaves is a indication of a root problem... It might be Phytophthora.

The other root problem that causes this kind of drying is fertilizer burn. Did you give it anything recently?

Do you have cats?

Just to elliminiate ....you did check for Red spider mite?

Hi Andre

I've it in the shade and watered heavily the past 2 weeks, looks like it's improving but it's slow.

I'm a new convert to regular feeding, and this tree got the treatment along with all the rest.

I'm leaning towards ( & hoping for) fertilizer burn, but it's extremely funny that only this tree was affected.

Is this the only betula that you have? Some tree types are far more sensitive to fertilizer. Like beech are very sensitive, especially when they are putting out new spring growth. Could be why you are not seeing it on other trees. But you should check for root rot, and borers as well if the tree doesn't shape up with a reduction of fert.
