My biggest tamarind

Hi IBC.

Bigger is better, I heard too often.

I would like to share with you folks My biggest tamarind in production. second styling, the first was done I think sept 2010, then I cut it back short and left with 4-6 inches of the major branches.
I left 2 to 3 branches in one spot to be sure (insurance), then cut/remove the 2 branches in the future.

There is a cut on the upper right side, I used the tapered top branch on the left side as the "leader" to the new apex, to lessen the visual impact of the cut, but when healed the cut won't be much visible as the position is concealed from a many angles.
I got the tree from UP as bare rooted yamadori material. the tree was in my garden when you visited, near my acacia material tree. just very wild in form that time.

Why? this is the viewing angle/ front of the tree. do you asked the same thing for other trees? hehehe. Or do you believe that a tree should be viewed from all angles? There was a discussion here not so long ago of the same 360 degree issue...Show me first yours and I'll show you mine.

Sweet.... I love it. I am hoping you are sticking to the 1st. or 2nd picture as your front and not the 3rd. one (there is more movement in the initial pics.).

I don't see any scars either, which is amazing for this size trunk. I am guessing that you will grow a sacrifice close to the apex and maybe grow the apex a couple inches taller for better proportion. Just my thoughts.

Hi Jun,
I agree with you that you should always want to show the front of the tree (hence the word 'front'). However, lately I have been interested in studying a tree from all angles to improve my own perception of bonsai design. So I don't see any harm in showing other angles for learning sake.

Hi Qui!

No don't apologize. I understand what you meant as "sumo tree", In fact I am heading for that design and will keep the the tree short and stout to give more emphasis on its powerful appearance.
..and with regards to the other side, I also understand, I am just messing around with your question. I'll show it in due time, I photograph all my trees from more than 10 angles and the top. it is a very interesting tree from all angles. I am designing my trees too (except for cascade) form all angles so that I'll have a choice in the future when I am more "matured" (in bonsai) and acquire more vision and knowledge.

It is a heavy tree alright, the tree alone is difficult to lift by just one person and it is much heavier now in its growing pot. When the top is finished it would be 80 to 90cm high. and as for the width it would be almost as double as the current diameter. that is how a matured tamarind looks like in the wild.

I will grow still a bit taller, but just a bit. I want it wide and short.
It got many angles, just like the rest of my trees I am designing it with many angles. Better to be safe than sorry...or regret a decade lost of design process.

somehow the side with you arms wide out [ second image ],felt better for development.
This side presently being shown feels a little too, 1,2,3.

What does it look like leaves open ?

If you don't mind me asking, what is the soil mix ?
Are those fertilizer pots ?

another update.

Almost a year now since my last work on this tree. I was supposed to wire it this weekend, but the sudden rainy season gives it a new foliage and branches, so I'll have to let it be for now.

wow, that is an amazing tree. we have many huge tamarinds close to my house and i'm air layering a few branches at the moment in hopes of producing something nice.

how did this tree start out in life? i assume it was dug up from the ground at about the diameter it is now? but i don't understand how it can have branches that close to the ground on wild tree? usually they would be a couple of meters up right? can you explain its growth history?

my wife is from a part of Thailand that is famous for its tamarinds, in fact most of her family work in the tamarind business. it pretty easy for me to find stumps about this size so i'm very keen to know more about this tree and to get low branches on it.
