Chlorosis??? Empty Chlorosis???

Post  Orlando0341 Fri Sep 05, 2014 9:23 pm

Hi,

I have a problem with my Punica Granatum, last year he grew very poor and he got these leaves at the end of summer for the first time. This year i let him grow and only gave him water and fertilizer, but it comes back again. The new leaf is almost transparent and as the leaves gets older, the chlorophyll is coming back.I have searched the internet and I think it's chlorosis but i don't know for sure.

Your help is greatly appreciated,

Nope. That's an insect of some sort, possibly a leaf miner. Chlorosis shows the discoloration along the midrib and veins.

Thank Jim,

I have some better pictures of the leaves.
When the leaves unfold they look like this, but without the green that comes back over time.

Agree with Jim - definitely insect or maybe spider mite damage. Treat for both. It is not nutrition related.

Looks almost like a variegated leaf variety.

Jim could be right but if the leaf is healthy & remains so...I'd bet it is variegated.

In my experience in plants with pests, leaves unfold looking awesome then pesty boogers put on their bibs and attack. If they are unfolding looking like these pictures, it seems something else is involved. I'm not the expert, but I think it needs another think as to the cause. I certainly don't see any wilting/browning/blackening/holes/deformation that usually goes along with sucking attacks.

Funny that someone mentioned variegation- I have a kiwi vine, I believe called polaris. In the cool of spring, the leaves are variegated green and white, the white sometimes even blushing into pink. Not too long after the summer heat hits, all leaves begin reverting back to green, and after a time there is no more sign of variegation. Possible for this plant in question?

Thanks for your help.I brought it to a bonsaiclub, there they said it was fungus Related or maybe a variegated leaf variety. It is not nutrition Related. They could not find traces of bugs.

From the pictures you have provided, it doesn't look sick. How long have you had this particular plant?

I ask because if you've owned it a long time and it is only recently doing this, then it is a different issue. 'Gosai Ryu' is described as having sharply speckled white variegation and reddish new growth.
