Would people on this forum consider this a Bonsai or a plant in a pot. This shot was taken in spring 2009. Which ever way people take it I still enjoy the flowers.

Maybe a penjing. It is lovely. Could use a somewhat smaller pot, though.

The dictionary sez---------------

"potted plant (as a tree) dwarfed (as by pruning) and trained to an artistic shape, also the art of growing such a plant"

I will paraphrase an old saying: ---bonsai is in the eye of the beholder---

I'm also voting penjing... there's too much wild grace to be bonsai. And mind you... I think there are a many penjings in the world that smoke 99% of the bonsai there is... and several that equal the best. So please don't think calling it penjing is a "downgrade" because it isn't. Cool I'm an equal fan....

I agree about the pot... it needs to be about 1/3 the height... Try and get it to be as tall as it is wide.... and your cascade will be infinitely cooler. And given the coloration of your bark and flowers... I'd go with a dark cobalt blue.... sort of like the color of the pot in this photo....

I love the tree and also could care less about classifying it. What is it? Deep blue or purple sure would make those flowers pop.

Ooooooooooooo puuurple.... love that notion! I generally dislike the color purple in pots... this would be an exception. Gary is a pot guy... who knows of what he speaks. You should just get him to make you one. That would be too hawt for words. Being an owner of many Gary Wood pots... I can tell you they are sublime. ThumbsUp

Thank you for the feed back,

I like the idea of either a blue or purple pot.

Originally I bought this from a nursery. I had been a display plant for many years and resided in a round tapered 20 inch x 20 inch pot.
The pot that it is in currently was its first repot and reduction for many years.
The pot is a Hex 14 inch H x 10 inch. W

Gary do you post OS. Smile

Just stunning - beautiful work.

It's great to see such awesome use of Autralian natives. Which species of Acacia is it?

Thanks Peter. I'll have to look out for it here in the west. Does it tolerate root disturbance well?

I root pruned it last year for the first time and removed about 2/3rds of the root ball .
So yes, so far so good.

It also throws back on old wood.

I'd consider it a bonsai since that is the English word. Your tree has a wild grace and riotous display of yellow. Very nice.

Not all trees need to have fat tapering trunks.

Peter, lovely tree. I favor Penjing; the trunk looks like calligraphy. Beautiful! A deep blue glazed pot would set it off nicely. Purple would be daring but stunning! I agree with the others ragarding what to call it. This is a plant in a pot; Bonsai, Penjing or Pensai. Salut, Todd Very Happy

Amazing tree!

Acacia cuteformis, yes! Very unusual species, a lot of poetry in this tree, penjing (I'm a fan of penjings, it's even the only word I can say in mandarin Wink ), bonsaï or potted tree, who cares: it's simply beautiful!

cheers cheers cheers cheers cheers cheers cheers cheers , and cheers

Call it what ever you want. I'd take it in a heart beat. A quick pot virtual.

It is a wonderful bonsai. One may look at any Kokufu book to see unconventional bonsais there.

Dear Peterth,

Very lovely!!!!!! one of the best flowering bonsai that I have ever seen. It touches the feminine side of my heart!

The pot is perfect too, the masculine image of it gives contrast to the feminine gracefulness of the branches and flower clusters. and color of the pot give highlights to the yellowish flower.
...simply perfect Sir!

I have categorized this Acacia to pravissima as my original guess was wrong. Still unable to find a purple pot for it.
