As membership secretary of a bonsai society, I received this email on 2nd September:

Dear all,

I hope you don't mind me contacting you out of the blue, but I hope that you might be able to help me. My father had two mature bonsai trees (see picture below) stolen from his garden in Tamworth, Staffordshire last night. He is as you might expect very upset having trained these trees over the last 30+ years. I hope you might be able to share this information within your clubs/shops/contacts such that if someone try's to sell them to one of your members, friends or contacts that you could let me know ? I would really love to see these returned to him, although I realise there is faint hope of this.

I hope you can help ??

Best wishes

Always really saddening to hear of thefts like this. They both look like Larches? I hope that the publicity here helps them to be located.

The thieves just can't understand the extent of the hurt that they inflict, with their nasty little greedy actions. I've had several friends affected by thefts and only once were we able to get the trees back. That was by the concerted effort of friends searching the area for hours after the theft was discovered. All the trees were found stashed for picking up later, near a railway line.

good idea - if the theft was a planned effort using a vehicle, there'd be little chance of immediate recovery,
but hooligans acting on a lark wouldnt be able to run very far nor very fast with large trees...
