Boxwood Blight: Can You Help Identify? Empty Boxwood Blight: Can You Help Identify?

Post  rck89 Tue Jul 15, 2014 8:06 pm

My 75 year old boxwood bonsai (Kingsville?), has a new blight this season.  When I removed it from storage after a dreadful Winter, I noticed that the leaves gradually turned yellow about a half leaf at a time.  Then the flower buds died and small branches next.  A bonsai friend said it was a __?_ blight that is incurable!  I dont believe that or hope he's wrong.  I started treating with Decanoyl (sp?), which I did.  I then spent the better part of an hour cutting out infected leaves and dead branches.  Please check out my photos and offer help. Thanks.

NOTE: Photos did not upload....I'll try again.

I tried to post photos of my sick boxwood, but uploaded the wrong file. Now, I cannot upload the correct photo because the Copy box (dialog box) continues to hold the wrong photo info. I cannot get it to clear. What to do...going crazy! Thanks.

Jim - Thanks for your earlier answer, but it's the new problem that I need answered. That is, that I cannot upload new photos because the copy box does not clear itself of the old photo links. Do you know how to clear the copy box?

Like I said, only by going out of the REPLY screen and back to the topic, then hitting "Reply" again. If there's another way, I haven't found it. Fiona?

Hi rck, How do you winter your boxwoods? I put mine in a cold basement room with florescent lights over the plants that are evergreen. They get watered once a week.

I live in the same zone as you and from what I understand this boxwood blight originates in the south so if you have had them a long time, it may be the cold weather we experienced this winter. I know that many of my bonsai were ready to move outside but it was still too cold. Were you late also in getting the trees out? This may have been the problem.

Kind regards,

Post  rck89 Fri Jul 18, 2014 11:18 pm

Nora / K - Thanks both of your helpful comments. The photo link still refuses to clear (using Google Chrome), so pictures still just won't work for me!

I live in Chicago, so you know what a dreadful Winter we had. I winter my trees in a large garage closet complete with fans, heaters, and thermostats. I think that my plants either froze once inspite of my heaters OR the fans which blew directly on several of my trees caused wind desiccation on a wide scale. But how the fungus developed is beyond me. I will continue on a weekly basis to treat with Diconyl (sp?), no fertilizer, and mostly shade exposure.

Help me hope for the best...thanks, much!

Bob

I still can't seem to post the photos of my poor boxwood. But after a lot of research I believe that my tree has gotten voluntella (sp?). Apparenly, this is an incurable virus that turns boxwood leaves a spotty yellow then brown, before they fall off. The stems and the buds die - no flowers with this terrible disease! What I've read (and discussed with other local enthusiasts) is that this fungus can only be controlled with fungicides and massive feeding. I'm also keeping the plant completely free of debris, as best I can. So far my 75 year old tree is holding its own.

Any other thoughts or remedies on this disease would be appreciated. Thanks

Bob . . . I can't see why Chrome would be any different than Firefox (mine) or IE, but you might simply re-register under a new user name and password. That should solve the whole problem.

Try the following:

Click on the Host an image icon
Click on Choose file and then actually do that
Then Click Host it
When the option box opens up, click on the MIDDLE line to highlight it
Then press Control and C to copy
Then put your cursor in the text window (ie where you want you message to go). The Host an image box will disappear at this point.
Then press Control and V to paste the image.  You will see the code appear in the text window.
Then press Send to submit your post. The image will appear on it.

If you want to post more than one image, after you have done the Control V process on the first image, click on Host an image again and click on Upload. This will refresh the Host an image box. Then go through the process with your second image. And so on

I found with Chrome I had to add the html image tags before and after the url for the uploaded image

I added a ~ to the image tags so they would display - to use,  don't insert the ~

The method I outlined works for me on Chrome.

Step 1:  Click on Host an image and choose your pic. Then click Host it

Step 2:  The three line option box appears

Step 3: highlight the MIDDLE one (it turns blue)  then press Control and C to copy the text

Step 4: Click the cursor into the text pane where you want the pic to go. Then press Control and V to paste the image. The Host an image box disappears.

Now just press Send to lodge your post in the thread.

For posting more than one image, get yourself through all the previous tasks to this point:
Boxwood Blight: Can You Help Identify? Screen15

This time, instead of pressing Send, click on the Host an image box again.  You will see it still has the three line option box from your first pic.

Click on Upload and you will get back to the Choose file section.

As was previously stated, it's then a case of lather, rinse, repeat.

Well my 75 year old boxwoods seem to be holding their own. Though Voluntella (sp?) is supposedly always fatal, I'm cutting out all infected leaves and stems immediately, treating the trees with various fungicides, and feeding the heck out of them and they are still alive! So any thoughts would be helpful. This is a terrible disease!

Thanks for all of the photo posting suggestions. Maybe the I'll get lucky with this positng!

Yes...I think? It certainly seems to have all of the symptoms of the blight. But I am certainly open to other diagnosis - since voluntella is always fatal. Your thoughts would be welcome. Any ideas for treatment.

Rick, I'm thinking along with Ironman. Could nematodes be the problem?
