can I collect during fall season

Post  Tarek (from Lebanon) on Wed Aug 27, 2014 7:28 am

Hi guys,
During the summer I did lots of hiking trips along with my GPS and located few trees that might have good Potentials.  Most literature says that the best time to collect is early spring, however I read also that there is a narrow window during the Fall (Autumn) season.
My question is when does this window start and when does it end?
Appreciate your help

Hard to say, because we don't (most of us) live in or near Lebanon. I for one have only a vague idea what your climate is like.

Your climate is not at all like any of the USA climate zones. Maybe one of the members from Greece, Israel or other Mediterranean countries could comment. But if your temperatures stay warm enough that the soil in a pot won't freeze, fall may very well be a good time to collect. If there is a chance the trees you marked are going to be destroyed by construction, it might be better to collect sooner rather than risk loosing them. If they are safe where they are at, take your time, get feed back from those familiar with your climate and decide when to do it based on the growth characteristics of the species you are going to be collecting.

Hello all!
I know Italian bonsaists who start collecting in autumn.
BUT, do you feel you are experienced enough to dig up a tree and get it to survive and thrive?

I suggest that you can collect your targeted trees now, IF shoots are no longer extending and the foliage is hardened. If there is still light green colored new growth, I suggest you wait until it becomes a mature green color.

Thank you guys,
True I am not experienced enough Alexandra, but the reason I would like to start collecting in the autumn is due to the fact that some of these trees will be destroyed before the spring anyway (+ other reasons). So I wanted to check when is the best window to collect.

Someone advised me to collect when the leaves turn yellow and start falling which is close to what Osoyoung suggested. I will see how things turn about and keep you updated.

Thanks again

My area is near the Chesapeake Bay and humid, zone 7A. Our average winter temp is about 38 F. and summer approx 86F. I'm guessing at these but should be close. There are alot of temperature swings, much colder and much hotter.

My club and I do collect in late fall starting around mid-December with good success. We collect very hardy native trees which are easy to grow, mostly American Hornbeam and Beech, native (highbush) blueberry. We also dig landscape plants when we can find someone that wants them removed. But again hardy trees, junipers and yews. I protect the newly collected trees from freezing temps and wind and ventilate them when the weather is moderate.

This past year we dug landscape yews in late Dec and early January (would have preferred March but the owner said we had to get them out). The weather then became very and unusually cold. Club members had significant losses. I lost one out of three and mine were buried in mulch and under plastic. We do not normally suffer too many losses when the weather is more reasonable and would have had more success if we were able to dig in March.

However, in my experience, (Virginia) pines cannot be collected until late winter, say end of February and first of March.

But, as the guys said, depends on your climate. At least wait until dormancy.

Best regards,

Augustine

Thank you Augustine. I will take what you said into consideration and will share my experience, either being successful or failure.

As mentioned, your local weather is the strongest factor whether it will work or not. Other factors are; what species you are collecting, soil mix you will use, misting/watering, protection from drying sun/wind after, in general...your experience collecting and providing after care.

Good luck!

Croatian climate along the coast line could be similar to your climate. The Croatians very successfully start collecting in November through to February. The results are better from the Novbember crop.

There you go! I think Sebastijan (Sandev bonsai) and Marijah (& company- animabonsai) are among the best collectors out there. It is very inspiring to see their blog and watch their videos. They are actually the reason I got started collecting, in my own little way. Smile

If you haven't yet, check them out!

Do you have an experienced friend who has done collecting before that could go with you and assist?

It's how I learned, and was so helpful to do correctly, to build your confidence for collecting.

This year, where I live, permits in the forest were cancelled due to extreme forest fire dangers, cancelling any spring activity.

I'm hopeful to get out this fall to find some western larch.

Good luck with your adventure, and if you go, be sure and share your results with us. Smile

Unfortunately Dick I cannot anyone in Lebanon who is interested in this amazing hobby, so I am all on my own. However when I go in the wild I take my Niece with me. She is 16 and she loves Nature, and she is getting a bit into this hobby as well. I read lots about the matter but it is not the same like seeking things first hand. I do collect from mountains and I do find tons and tons of potential materials, just no time and experience to collect them.

Anyhow, i will keep all of you posted Smile and thanks for the good wishes
