Branch placement Empty Branch placement

I have enjoyed this forum for a while now and I am amazed at how easy the members  make it look. I see you post pics of trees that you recently acquired and how you want them to look, and then I see the tree a few years down the road, and again I am amazed that how the branches grow exactly where you wanted them to. I grow a tree and only by luck will a branch grow where I want it to. My question is how can I get a branch grow where I want it to? Is there a secret no one wants us newbies to know?

Please be more specific. Which do you mean: How to get a new branch to grow where there isn't any? Or how to get an existing branch to grow in the right direction?
The answer to the second question is wiring. When you style a tree, you wire most of the branches. Then you bend them where you want them to grow. You remove the wire just before it starts to cut in. With some trees, this process has to be repeated several times before the branches stay in place.
For the first question, there are two options. On some trees, like Chinese elms, you cut back the existing branches. If you're lucky, a new branch will sprout where you want one. On trees that don't bud back easily, you put a thread graft where you want a new branch. If you Google on Thread Graft, I'm sure you will find instructions. http://www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/ATthreadgrafting.htm

With luck it grew out exactly where I wanted it  Very Happy

There are other grafting options, but I do not have much experience on it.

Some of the "tricks":

1. Super feed the tree to promote budding supplementing with Ingredients high in cytokinins, such as seaweed, plant hormones that stimulate budding.
2. Thread graft
3. Approach graft.
4. Move branches from other areas and fake it.

I have been feeding it like crazy, and cutting back on it pretty hard. I am trying to grow a new top. I want the new branch to grow about where the wire starts.

Is it alright to do that this time of year? It is already in the Mid 90's in central Texas.
