Forcing Privet shoots

Post  Harleyrider on Wed Oct 14, 2009 3:42 pm

Does anyone know if Privet can be forced to produce shoots by drilling or cutting/notching the bark?
I know they produce masses of new growth from around major cuts on stumps/branches, so am I correct to assume that the same applies to smaller damage?

Not sure if this will work or not.Privet has very thin bark and the scars may persist for some time. As you've got so many try an experiment in the spring

Good thinking, Batman! I suppose I could sacrifice one of the weaker specimens in the name of research.

And it'd be more humane than forcing it to smoke 20 fags a day and squirting shampoo in its eyes.

I think it could be done, when I cut or rip shoots of my privet new shoots form around, above the wound.
Try it in spring, dont now with drilling holes though.

Hi Peter. Surely with damage and a slowing of sap or auxins, the budding will take place below the wound?

Thanks chaps. I'll wait to see which of the half-dozen or so I'm taking to Burrs Tony chucks in the bin, then I'll hide it somewhere quiet until Spring!
