Sunny morning Gosh, Will not last. Please Two Red Pines in the Ground planted x years ago now teenagers+ spring has brought forth a large flush of
candles which seem to extend over night at a alarming rate, (middle finger length plus). How many and To what length do i remove or reduce please.
For such young trees I am surprised at already ageing of he bark.Maybe book , site ,(recommended) for reference, thank you for your time. Roger. U K

If it is Japanese Red Pine, P. densiflora, it is my understanding that strongly growing trees can be treated like Japanese Black Pine, P. thunbergii. This means the tree can be decandled with the weaker ones first and the strongest ones last so they will put out a more uniform set of smaller candles later in the summer. There are several more detailed discussions on this forum and elsewhere.

If it is the North American Red Pine, P. resinosa, I have not heard how to treat them. However, Wikipedia says it is a 2 needle pine with long needles so I would be tempted to treat one that is growing strongly like P. thunbergii. I am guessing that someone in the IBC has experience.

I guess this is why the horticultural name is useful.

I follow Ryan Neil's lectures now ... he said, cut it all, whether weakest, medium, strongest.

But that's a certain part of the year :

HI here From South Wales U. K. I am in fact Roger Living Cardiff City, Your response is Worthwhile i will now take it to another stage.back
ground info , Org Three, given as present when saplings lost one along the way .Best place , set into garden bed, once or twice very minor T L C,
back 3/4 years surrounded with forest mulch ground level. the effect was this thrust and growth,Last season under pressure just clipped them back.
They seem to have responded with even more vigour, i will now my health permitting Take stock of the said trees to see if they might be in the running as to being and on the road to one day becoming Bonsai material proper.Of all the other pines if it were a race the red would win with the size of the candles.
Again so many thanks. I do hope we get chance to chat again,.My very best Regards roger
