New Pots from PT Empty New Pots from PT

Post  prestontolbert Sat Aug 17, 2013 9:15 pm

Hey all,
I haven't shown pots in this forum in a long while so I'll update y'all on what Ive been doing.  I moved back to North Carolina from Arizona in '09 and built a new wood kiln.  I am a full time potter and I mostly make functional everyday kitchenware and tableware (bowls, cups, pitchers).  I also make teaware, ikebana containers, and bonsai pots.  I have been doing bonsai since 2005 when I was in a pottery class with Robert Wallace and I traded pots for trees.  I got pretty well addicted and my trees have taken over.  Anyway, I have been making bonsai pots all along, just for myself up until recently.  Last week I unloaded a kiln and this week I finally got a good photography set up.  So...New Pots from PT Round911

You do nice work Preston.

This is a well executed pot.  There's just something special about a pot fired in a wood burning kiln.

I look forward to seeing more.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks paul,
I love the idea of just giving the pots over to the kiln, allow the the flame to do its thing.

Please feel free to criticize, i could use some feedback.

Hi Preston,

good to see your new work.

I especially like the first one. The rather rough form and the wood firing effects go very well together.

In two weeks Steve Harrison will be here and we will build my wood fired kiln. Hope I will have such good results as yours.

Hey Andreas,
Good luck on your kiln building! Show your progress on the forum. I know I want to see whats going on. These pots were fired with pine for three days in an anagama type kiln. The next pot is a 7 inch bunjin.

Hi Preston,

great glazes and great bonsai pots!
A big compliment for my part.
How large is your wood kiln?
I've been thinking for a long time to build a wood kiln, but I think you need a lot of patience and a lot of time....

Best regards from Vienna,

Christian-
Thanks for the compliment. My wood kiln is fairly small, about 30 cubic feet (less than a cubic meter) and I fire it off very quickly, in about 16 hours. But the kiln I fired these pots in is a larger community kiln, about 120 cubic feet (over three cubic meters). With a community kiln you don't need as much patience and time because you have plenty of help! We typically fire for three days and burn 3 cords of wood. I like to burn pine, but I have done firings with exclusively cherry, oak, pear/apple, and walnut. I hear that elm really makes beautiful glaze, but I've never had a good source. You do have to have patience to cool the kiln; it takes a week! I will post pics of the kilns when I find some.
-Cheers, PT

Hello Friends!
Here are some new anagama fired pots!

This is a small bunjin style pot that I am really happy with.  I threw it on the wheel, cut the feet with a knife, then tore the edges. It leaves a rustic, yet refined look that to me screams "red pine"  Laughing

This is another round I was really happy with. The fire is particularly nice and the rim warped in a pleasing way.  Usually pots with warped rims go to the shard pile.  At the high temps I fire I usually have about 20% loss to warping and cracks.

Hi Preston,

very nice. I like the colours, especially the gray flashing that you get on your pots.

Thanks Andreas-
The predominant color in the kiln is gray. The difficulty lies in getting other colors such as green, orange and yellow.

Great pots Preston, and right here is NC, the pottery capital. Can you give us some info on how to obtain some of these pots. Would love to have you as a guest at the club in Raleigh.
