Hello,

Since a few years i have a little baobab. The plan was to grow it as a bonsai. The first year the plant dropped it's leaves the end of march. After a month i've pruned it. It started growing after about 2 months.
This year it did't drop it's leaves, so i'm confused what to do. The baobab doesn't seem sick, but it hasn't many leaves. Normally trees drop their leaves in autumn. But mine didn't. Should i force it by giving no water?
Now it's spring and i've tried to attach a photo (but it didn't work) to show how he's doing now. Maybe someone can give me some advise. give it more water? or less?(i do this once a week when the soil is dry), repot it or not. prune it or not.
I realize it's not directly a bonsai topic but i hope someone can give me some advise.

kind regards, Cis

I hope someone from the tree's native range can answer.  I have no idea whether these trees ever drop leaves by season.  I'd suspect that the leaf drop the first time was from some change of environment.

Cis, I have heard that Baobab can retain their leaves if you keep it inside during winter and the temperatures are high enough.

Wait for new leaves to form before potting it up.

I also repot in a dry mixture and water only after a few days - this may prevent rot from setting in where roots are damaged.

Do use a free draining mix - if you can get a succulent mix it will be fine.

Our trees here are going yellow now - our night temperatures falls below 20 degrees Celsius at night, forcing the trees into rest.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Jim and Lennard for your answers. There's one more thing i want to know. In the Netherlands it's spring now, so it's getting warmer and lighter. But my baobab behaves as if it's going to be autumn, so, should i give it more water or shall i stop giving water until all off the leaves drop and wait for new leaves.

Kind regards,
Cis

Wait for new leaves to show - it will bud out without being given water.
