This year my Queen Fagus was first time wired. After I was building basics of ramification for few years...I thought it was time for first serious wiring and editing. So, we have started with removing excess of everything...selection of branches

Wonderful tree, well done!

Sorry if I missed something, but how do you collect a tree that size???? I'm wondering specifically about the roots?

Thanks Todd, tmmason and r3mco

Gerhard...
Well, you have to have enough deterrmination, some good and specific tools that help alot, a car big ebough to put the tree in after collecting, a friend or two with you to help you carry the tree to the car...
If you combine all this with tears, broken back and moments of desperation you can count that the result will be such a big tree in your garden Smile
In recent time, I am beginning to be less and less fond of that kind of XXL fun

Hi Sebastijan

I know nothing about the species, but locally collecting something that size would probably take a ground layer (if at all possible), and then you won't have than nebari.

Cool Sounds like the collection was like all worthwhile things in life......not easy!

I love your tree, it speaks to me! Good luck with the future develop and I'm sure you'll enjoy the process and the result.

Cheers
Gerhard

C'mon....  I do not believe there is nearly enough 'salt in the pepper' (your hair) to rate those sorts of geriatric comments yet!  But, I do suspect there is at least one, or possibly even two more new Monster-Sized Bonsai trees in your future, Mr. Sebastijan Sandev? Cool

Gerhard,

no, no need to ground layer. Just dig and cut the roots. No problem with Fagus...it is easily rooted in a training box if you leave enough last years buds on the branches.
And...there is no such thing as "too big" if I really want to collect the piece...
There was more big stuff in recent years...

yes, possible, possible, always possible Smile

I LOVE this tree!

My wife thought I was having a silent seizure cause I was staring and drooling at the computer screen for so long. Youtube only shows when a video was posted. Was the video actually filmed close to that date? If so the progression so far is great. Would it be possible to see pics of the large cut sites and how you carved them, or how they're healing?

Thanks, Mike

Mike,
Video with Walter was filmed just a few days before it was published...let's say a week. Yes, progression is very good and it is not surprising if someone knows what to do with the material, I guess?! Yes of course...large cut sites...that' s a good idea...give me a day or two and I will post the photos..
Thanks for your kind words, I'm glad you like the tree Smile

Oh yes, one more thing Mike...wounds are healing great...one more important thing..that tree is so strong now, it wasn' t been repoted for four years and it is stronger and stronger from year to year. When the tree is so nicely established you can do to him whatever you want...almost.
We..I mean bonsai people...often repot our trees too much. My strong believe and experience is that has to be done rarely or with conifers almost never. Broadleaves every five years...not sooner

Good point about repotting too much Sebastijan.
I've wondered about this before. Not having much experience with keeping trees alive in small pots (4th summer now) the biggest lesson I've learned is not to blindly follow anyones advice. Guidelines to repot this species, every x amount of years regardless, never felt right with me. I've always had a green thumb with other horticultural endeavours since I was a kid following my instincts. And hearing advice/experience such as this rings true.
Thanks for explaining more of your horticultural practises in detail. This tree is obviously very healthy.

Thanks, Mike

Hello Sebastijan,
I would really like to see how the tree looks today? I assume it's starting to open or already opening if you're in Croatia? Or maybe still closed like our Beech here? I would love to see how the cuts look today so I can hopefully next year make a similar cut to my beech stump and hornbeam.

Thanks,
Thomas
