I must express my extreme and burning jealousy that you have access to Graham Potters trees and I, stuck here on the wrong side of the Atlantic, can only look at his website and dream.
-Jay
you know I actually got crazy enough to e-mail him one night and ask if there was any way I could fly over there, buy the tree, and then fly home with it......I never heard back.

CRAB APPLE Empty Crab Apple (US Crabapple)

Post  bonsaisr Mon Nov 07, 2011 3:00 am

Dear Jay, in order to import a tree into the US these days, it must be grown in the home country for two years in a screened quarantine setup, then grown in the US for another two years under quarantine.

You know, I talked to Fred Jansen (Hollow Creek) last month and he's making the initial arrangements with USDA and setting up a quarantine for importing, he wasn't sure yet if he was going to commit to it yet but he thought once he retired next your he might go for it! I told him go for it!

Must say I'm quite jealous you guys can get hold of these Junipers over there at such reasonable cost!

I know there are people in South Florida who import trees, but a crab apple would not make it for two years in South Florida, nor would many other temperate trees.

Thats a beautiful Crab, by the way. The branching is excellent! The only thing I would do would be pop it in a nice dark blue pot next re-potting, I love the dark blue with red fruited trees. Not only do you have one of Graham's trees but you also have a crabapple that I would trade 20 junipers for! I have yet to find a nice Crabapple for myself.

haha, for 20 of those san hose junipers i'll fly one of those little crab apples over myself, drop it off in south america maybe, a fast power boat to florida in the dead of night, swim it ashore and motor bike it to your house !!! Cool

its so funny that we all are envious of the trees we cant get easily - i look at the japanese black pines and specimen maples and think they are such a good price - but then getting them QT'd and delivered will cost about half as much again, plus a potential 2 year wait which will set the tree back a lot. then we see all those great american junipers for £500 but i wouldnt know how much it would cost to get them delivered (unless i could have a box collected on our international courier account maybe????) - 3 day service would be quite reasonable i think. not sure about customs though !! Marcus-

the great gamble (at least with trees coming in state side) as i have read is that even with proper phytosantitary documentation and all your ducks in a row, a customs officer can still restrict the importation, while your standing right there, and your long fought for (and paid for) tree goes in the trash.

Apparently in the states there are some ports of entry that are notorious for doing just this, say if the trunk of the tree is to thick, or if the tree is more than 12 inches tall..all sorts of odd reasons.

Nice maple stock on its own roots is actually becoming harder to find in the USA also. Nurseries may have 3 or 4 trees but thats it. I think its a matter of no one producing them, and larger growers having to adapt to market conditions and produce what sells, which are the grafted stock for home landscapers.

great tree.... agreed that it would look better in a pot similar to the one that it is in already except blue...

if looking for Acer P on its own roots in the states... talk to Chris Kirk.... of Telperion farms.... they are growing quality prebonsai IIRC its all from cuttings... and if not... its low grafted for bonsai...

PS. look at me... posting on IBC

I'm wondering if anybody is growing crabapples here on the gulf coast. I had one, but it died pretty quick.
I never got to figure out how to keep her alive.

CRAB APPLE Empty your crab apple

Post  Peter Adams Sat Nov 12, 2011 11:14 pm

I would get the copper wire off that tree really quick. When I used to import apples into UK, the ones wired with copper always had burn marks on the bark.
Aluminium is the better tool in terms of plant friendliness.
