Post  Guest Thu Mar 01, 2012 7:58 am

I have stones found in other countries...rivers, nature and shops.
On this topic will I be happy to show them to you all Very Happy

Nohdanser
The first yellow jasper was found on a pathway, on a templeground in Kyoto Japan, it had earned its patina from being stepped on by millions of tourists, through many years.
The stone stands 9 cm. tall in its new daiza, carved in teak, and dyed.

Hi Ogie

Many thanks for your kind words.

I was sitting and looking at the photo from the front, and I can see the stone/daiza will be better ballanced if I go back to the dremmel, and remove abot 1.5 mm more fron the one side.

The stone needs support on the backside...but what do you think of it? .

Hello Yvonne,
Not easy to make a daiza for this figure stone, but here it is.
I made a quick virtual, only to see how it would work with a softer line.
And one with a changed left side.

Hi Ogie and Sunip

Thanks foir your drawing Sunip...I can see you took away the flip-ower the would show it was a kimono. It can actully be removed compleetely, but I am not sure I will want to do so...I must think.
Like you, I dont think it looks well on the photo, but in the real world is it quit qute.

After I showed my own change, did I go back to work, and took away the not very acurate side, while Is was at it, did I remove a tiny ton from the backside.
Now I am really happy about the work. But to avoid being too fast one more time, will I look at it a little longer, before I show you the much better result.

Kind regards Yvonne

Hi Yvonne... The daiza is not a sculptural extension of the figure in Japanese stone appreciation. Making the daiza feet look like human feet would lower appreciation for suiseki enthusiasts.

Hi Peterbrod, Many thanks for your suggestion on how to make very nice humanlike feet on a daiza.

Hi Sunip, your drawing with Peterbrods two suggestions is very nice....but if I want a higher side on the right, must the whole daiza be much wider and bigger.

Hi Chris, Many thanks for this important clear information, it is giving me a reminder of keeping it simple. Playing arround, because it is funny to see what can be created is fine.....
But in the end, is it the stone that counts, and this stone is awesome. It deserves tradion, witch I also prefer and want.
I now know, I must remove the kimonoflip-ower as Sunip suggested.

Kind regards Yvonne

This is my last work on this tiny daiza....if I remove more material, will it be gone Smile

Question to Chris....feet on human- and animalshaped daizas..is this only chinese?- Or could we speak about old, contra new japanese tradition?...is it a western "japanese" thing?

Hi Yvonne... Aaarggg-- I am moments too late in posting, but see you kept the appealing asymmetry in the new carving. The daiza looks improved to my eye (taking Sunip's suggestion while maintaining asymmetry). Your post, as I was keying, prevented the following from uploading...
I slightly prefer your daiza with a crease to Sunip's rendition of a soft curve, but not for the "hard line" versus "soft contour." I like your crease for its asymmetrical placement (notably to the left-of-center), which assures the daiza looks less symmetrical & arguably supports the visual flow of the figure toward the right. Especially for deep daiza with two visible feet under extreme ends, a symmetrical daiza face arguably recalls an "egg cup" stand.

We might agree that this is easily overdone. A daiza face should normally only be creased where a touching stone perimeter abruptly turns. Is there a better alternative to avoiding a tall, symmetrical cup-stand? Perhaps, but it is not obvious to me.

I want to show you a very nice Setagawa stone ( Tokyoriver) I brought back home from my visit in japan this january.
The stone had been in loving care for years, and it is easy to see the old patina the owner had given the stone through many many years. The stone have never had a daiza, it was in a suiban without water always, inside the house.
After the szunami a year ago, the stone came up for sale, and I bought it from my friend Horibesan, who also told me its story.
He had kept it outside in a waterfilled suiban, and the old patina had become a bit rough, but still it was very much visible.
I am now doing what I can to bring the indor feeling back to the stone again.

I pushed send in steadt of preview, so.... Neutral

The stone is 20.5 cm long, and 9 cm. tall, 7 cm wide...
It is easy to understand why the stone always was in a suiban, as it in a natural way, is very ballanced by it self.

Even though, do I want to make a diza for the stone, and will soon begin.....if anyone have a designsuggestion is it very welcomne.

I hope you like the stone....

Kind regards Yvonne

Hi Stonener

Good luck....It is a very difficult daiza to carve, many levels has to be spot on, or it will not work....
My stone has rounded corners, this mean, it must fit perfect inside too, or the result will not be usefull.
Look forward to see your result....I am planning to wait a little, hoping I become a better carver before doing this one.

Kind regards

Hi Stonener

You must have stunning days...in the mountains, and by the river ( I have seen your photos).....we only have the flat beaches, witch is most stunnig, when there is sun, no wind, and low waterlevel, I love them anyway...the highest hill in Denmark is maybe 130m tall, I dont know exacly, it could be higher....we call it "The Sky Mountain" Smile

Kind regards Yvonne
