My bonsai en and progress

Post  Neli on Thu Jan 16, 2014 5:04 am

Do You remember when I posted here my first tree at the end of 2012. It was a variegated ficus bejamina from a nursery.  Very Happy
I have been infected badly with this disease and I have been progressing slowly.
I thought you might enjoy all my DIY efforts and bonsai struggles.
Now I think I have more than 500 prebonsai in different stages...and thousands of sticks....many growing in the ground.
I have been working on my bonsai en, making a concrete pipe every other day and adding it for a stand. Still a long way to go, but getting rid of the mess slowly.
I still need to make better shelves under the shade cloth I put but that will be the next project.
this pictures were taken at night:

It is still a big mess but hopefully I shall sort it out soon:

Stones under the shelves...pots everywhere...but still putting pipes/stands. It will be a bonsai square.

I love your enthusiasm and drive . Thanks for sharing Smile

Over the decades of my involvement in Japanese hobbies, I found this circle to be inevitable.....

first your enthusiastic about the hobby, gather books and want one of everything you've read about.

Then you begin to define your favorites, and begin working seriously to their development.

Finally you become infatuated with shows and you look at your trees under very critical standards.

Finally in you retirerment years, your back to being happy, just being back spending time with your trees.

I see it as coming full circle with any hobby.

In koi, I wanted one of each color. Then I wanted the best water to keep them happy.
next was just fish of quality for shows. (when I realized I'd never win grand Champion) I'm presntly enjoying koi for the happiness they bring me, irregardless if they have a show pattern or not.

Suiseki is no different.

Thank You Darling. I think I am getting infected with suiseki too.
I new I can not show my Koi, and I dont keeo them for that. They are a joy, and if I am going to keep them, I have to be fair to them and give them the best conditions I can.
Most of my trees I have never posted...but I have gone out of my way to look after them properly. They give me great joy!!!! GREAT!
I can sit for hours looking at them.
Just that I have great hardships with both hobbies. I can not buy anything for them.
Just imagine now I am making concrete pots that are supposed to look at least a bit decent, until the trees look better and I buy them proper pots.
But I am enjoying every bit of it.
One of my cement pots:
Primitive but precious to me.

That's a wonderful collection. As a newbie to the hobby I can appreciate your enthusiasm.
Would you mind sharing how you make you concrete poles?

Thank you,
Joe

I need to say thanks Doug, for you are being very kind, and post a picture for you to say thanks.
Let me go and look.

This is one of my tridents before , and this is after I massacred it.

I need to style it properly but for now will be like this. I cut the branches very short.
Baba K,
This one is for you since you like growing bonsai from seed: I grew both from seed, and you have to guess what is the second one.

And this one I grew from a tiny cutting. Just dug it up from my garden:

Needs it to recover and then I will think what to do with it.

I really need to keep my self busy...inventing silly things, torturing my trees, or just gazing at them.
Here is a picture for you:
This is a tree from the bush I made into instant ROR. Still need to work on the stone and the tree.

Haha I love it Neli. You have gone from none to 500 in 2 years and have really let the addiction that is bonsai take hold. I only wish I had the space to do as I would really like but unfortunately that is not the case at the moment. I also love your ingenuity in the way you have created and sculpted a place to show off your trees.

One thing I have to say though is that your wire holder looks a little heavy what with being made out of a chunk of concrete  affraid Shocked

Great work though and can wait to see your next creation  thumbs up

He he he! Thanks, but my wire rack is super! Now imagine you are pulling the wire from something light...it will come to you together with the wire... Rolling Eyes  This one stays put...and in one place...so no problem that it is heavy.
I run out of space also...so I bought the next door plot, after they got tired of me pleading.
Here is a picture for you...The trident in a new dress, on a new stand I made for it..

The second one I asked you to ID is a chilly. Got 4 of them from My neighbor...together with this:

I am the official tree scavenger in my area...and all my neighbors call me to dig their unwanted vegetation. Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes
I am waiting for the chilly to establish well and I shall chop it very hard.
The big ficus...I guess I shall airlayer all over...
Baba K, I love your tree but dont know what it is.

What a lovely passion, Neli!
I remember your first ficus Smile

I purchased a house with big garden some moths ago (just for bonsai) & now I'm trying to establish my bonsai-en as you did. It is great feeling!
So, I will follow you up Smile

Good luck!

Taner Darling!
I was following you up to now...The bougie is growing nicely...I chopped it very hard...carved it...and is growing fine...
That is lovely news that you have a nice yard now. What I like about my pipes is that you can put them in the flower beds...and plant flowers under.
The ficus has done well i think...or at least well for a first bonsai and considering that is in development for a year only and is trunk chopped 3 times:

Now is looking even better.
This is now I make the stands:
