Styrax, japanese snow bells
After becoming smittened by this variety, I was horrified while looking to get information on it in our search
function. There just isn't anything. have we added some new members that could contribute their knowledge
since the last inquirery? I hope so. I found a wonderful old tree at my local nursery but was informed that another had already spoken for it. So I picked up a young one from a club sale to learn on while I search for
a nice tree. Any and all information appreciated including where I might find something with some age and size.
thanks in advance.

Re: Styrax, japanese snow bells
Hi Dick,
first I have to say I don't have any styrax as a bonsai, but for years I want one! Preferably a really good old one, but in Germany there aren't any. I have seen two in Italy last year but they come with a price around 7-10k€.
What I do have is a styrax in the garden. I noticed that it is absolutely lime-hating, much more than, for example, magnolia or even rhododendron. I have very clayey, limey soil in my garden and the styrax has almost not grown since four years. Leaves are chlorotic, the bit what grows during summer often dies in winter. I will dig the tree next spring and plant it in pure kanuma, trying to convert it into a bonsai.
So, what I can contribute is: mind the soil and the water, keeping it at low pH.

styrax
Lodder's nursery in Holland used to import Styrax bonsai. Worth checking out.

Hi Peter,
I visit Lodder every year. No good, old Styrax so far... Maybe I will talk to them next time.

Re: Styrax, japanese snow bells
I have now 3 of the styrax and am looking to pot them up in a few months. So thought I'd do some more review on previous threads. WOW, I have to say of all the various threads, japanese snow bells don't get much respect. It saddened me to be reminded
of Peter Adam's passing, as i reread this thread.
Any tips from those who may see this thread re-newed will be appreciated.
