Short and stocky casuarina
Hi IBC.
I have a wonderful short and stocky casuarina material with natural tapering body, well healed cut wounds and nice nebari (buried for now under the soil)
I met Nacho Marin (A well rounded talented artist from Venezuela) in Malaysia and I was inspired by some of his sketches I decided to use one of his design ideas for this tree which is workable for this particular material...with some variation of course.
....what do you think.
regards,
jun

Re: Short and stocky casuarina
Hi Jun
fantastick material......and it looks like the drawing too.
I am not at all kean on the top, looks very artificial to me.....Will someone please show a photo of a real tree with a top like this, just to prove me wrong...I will then again be happy to have learned something new .
Kind regards Yvonne

Re: Short and stocky casuarina
Jun, this kind of an apex (actually without an apex) is to found among pines (Pinus silvestris) in the Far North, where apparently the snow pushes apex branches down so that green clouds are below the the branches themselves. Those pines are of course rather slender with an image that differs substantially from your stocky casuarina.... If I find a photo I'll post it...

Me too!!! I can see doing this if the material is unsalvagable otherwise, but you have plenty of branches to work with. I guess I see this as a way to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but what you're starting with is already a silk purse!
I guess if you're hell bent on doing something different for the sake of doing something different...

Hmmm . . . it dates back to at least 1579 -- but you don't hear it that often anymore, tho I heard it a lot when I was a kid (back in 1580). <g>

Although I agree that the material is worthy of a more traditional styling, I also think that this is a fun way to place a sacrifice branch as the taper becomes more realistic over the next few years.

Re: Short and stocky casuarina
Jun,
I like your tree and I like the rendering. I say go for it; nothing gained nothing learned as some would say. That type of styling is challenging to grow. I have a couple of trees with a "pulled down apex" and believe they will become nice trees. There are many penjing which do not adhere to traditional tree "styles" that are stunning. Your tree could make a beautiful cascade if you dropped the apex down (to cascade on the right hand side) to create the foliage masses below the roots in a long cascade pot. I would think this could be stunning with a casuarina.
Have fun!
Todd

Jun,
the trunk is so beautiful, all you need is a few branches to compliment it [the trunk].
No need for an over-design.
Later.

Jun, congratulation for having that piece of fantastic bonsai stock. It has the potential to be turned into a world class bonsai without resorting to exortic measures. I have always believe and support exploration and experimentation to push the boundaries of bonsai wider and deeper. The bonsai universe will be much better and richer. However to experiment with such good material is to me extravagant. I know u have already made up your mind. So this is just my thought.
Cheers.

Fox.
there are lot of casuarinas posted here in IBC, just search for it. what's good about it here is that they are in various training stages.

For Yvonne and Jun
Looking good Jun, thanks for the update.
At the beginning of this thread Yvonne asked to see a tree with that kind of top and I immediately thought of my collecting trips (above 5000') and found the attached photo, (photo taken from its side?). As you can see that the top was bent over, broken and its main top is now along the ground....with a secondary major branch now reaching for the sky. That tree (the mountain) see's about 30' of snow most years but I'm not sure that it equates to your local conditions.......maybe after a storm
Cheers from the great white north,
Graham
