It's going to minus 10 F tonight.

That's -23C if I can still do the math. Straight temps - no wind chill factors.

This will be when I find out If I can keep some junipers, a couple of trident maples, and a Japanese Black pine alive in Iowa weather.

I'm on a third floor balcony. My trees are snuggled-up next to my balcony doors inside styrofoam ice-chests.

You might consider setting the tridents inside during the coldest part.

I'm with you there. I brought them in until the temps rise above zero degrees F on Christmas day.

Still way to cold for tridents.

Now they're predicting -16 degrees. I guess they'll be indoors longer than I planned.

Keep a bag of ice in the cooler while they stay inside...tridents have a tendency to break dormancy early if they warm up even for a short period of time.

Good idea. I've got room to put them in a refrigerator if I have to. It's about 40 F in there.

if your blackpine is bone dry it will be ok just, wet soil and roots will need same protection as tridents to be 100% sure

I wish I knew that 12 hours ago. I watered the black pine, because it seemed bone dry. So here's my plan: The black pine and the trident maples are going into a refrigerator until Friday, when the minimum temps are expected to rise above 21F.
