Monster Yamadori Hawthorn Taproot Treatment Empty Monster Yamadori Hawthorn Taproot Treatment

Last spring, I used a back hoe to dig up a very large hawthorn. The tree was planted in a
grow bed. The trunk measures over 9" in diameter. My problem is that the tree has a gigantic
bulbous taproot. The thing must be over 12" wide. It extends, maybe, 18" below the nebari.
Can I just take a chainsaw and cut the thing off beneath the surface roots? Would I need to
apply cut paste to the large cut surface area below ground?

Hi Mrcasey

If the surfaceroots are strong enough to support the tree, would I cut off the taproot in a nice clean cut, as the hawthorn soon will form some roots along the cutline of the taproot.

If your tree look like this
