Here's to 2014 and good riddance to 2013!
Well, 2014 HAS to be a better year, yes?
As usual, we'll start out 2014 with a hot, spiced up bowl of Hoppin' John with friends. It's a good ol' boy tradition here in the Southern USA (though North Carolina seems to be a bit too far north for too many folks to know about it). When eaten on New Year's Day it's supposed to bring good luck in the coming year. Here's more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoppin%27_John and http://southernfood.about.com/od/blackeyedpeas/r/bl80308c.htm .
So if you're in the neighborhood tomorrow anytime after 1 p.m. . . . you all come. <g>

Happy New Year! Jim - its a wee far to show up tomorrow but thanks for the invite! I'll be joining you in Hoppin' John tomorrow though. No one in California seems to know this tradition, but its a family ritual with us.
May the new year bring only growth and prosperity to all at IBC!

BUT I had a great time in 2013 ...............
Pastelles, white bread slices, ham and eggs, for breakfast 0 yummy!!!
What are pastelles?
ground beef or ground pork cooked with onions/garlic and when cool add on sliced olives/golden raisins/chopped capers and maybe a Maggi seasoning cube, place on a thinnly pressed Promasa circle [ pre-cooked finely ground golden corn mixed with butter or margarine, water to dough, and also some seasoning ] in a pre-steamed/boiled banana leaf, fold up, tie and boil.
Allow to cool, freeze and on Christmas day / New years - boil, cool and serve. No the banana leaf is not eaten, just adds great flavour.
Place between white bread slices.
Enjoy.
The drink is home-brewed sorrel.
Happy New Year!!
Now sitting down with the dogs and a longgggggggggg night of silly fireworks - yeah - eyes roll

In the Mississippi delta, from Memphis to Vicksburg, they traditionally enjoy hogs-head and black-eyed peas on the new year. These never appealed to me, so I'll give it a miss this year too.
Enjoy your Hoppin' John, and I'll enjoy some red beans and rice w/ Andouille. It's finger-licking good!
