Bonsai Movies.
I recently watched the movie "Pain and Gain" (2013) which had some really nice bonsai in it. This got me thinking, "What movies have you seen that included bonsai?" The "Karate Kid" is an obvious answer. What else?

Ninja Assassin, which i found very annoying as they were against training trees. According to the movie, the tree should grow freely without force guidance.

I go to very few movies, but Crouching Tiger; Hidden Dragon had many very fine bonsai (penjing) in it.

Please see the section starting with http://www.phoenixbonsai.com/BoldlyGrow.html . I do have a short list of additional movies that I haven't added yet, and we're always on the lookout for more.

A lot of the Movie Bonsai have been well documented and well done Bob!
Spotted a juniper on Maura's the pathologist's desk in Rizzoli and Isles in Episode 41 i.e. Season 4 show 1 "We Are Family" (I think it was that episode anyway) the other night
As with the Criminal Minds bonsai appearance referred to in Robert's piece - Bonsai in this show also seems to be a metaphor for a character overcompensating to cover a degree of social inadequacy.
So as far as the media is concerned we're all a bunch of geeks
:-)

Re: Bonsai Movies.
A similarly irritating appearance in an episode of UK cop drama Dalziel and Pascoe where the murderer having a bonsai in his living room was taken as an indication of his twisted personality. Annoying enough on its own, but doubly so as the tree in question was a larch. Indoors? Really? Not even in Yorkshire.

Re: Bonsai Movies.
Should imagine if it hasn't already done so, it wont as it's been on over here since the mid-90s. I found the books a bit plodding at times I have to say and didn't read more than a few because of it.

How disgusting!! Larch in the living room???? At least he wasn't tending to his privets (Ligustrum) in his bedroom. Re: Bonsai Movies.
The lawyer TV show Franklin and Bash have bonsai almost in every episode. Their boss, played by Malcolm McDowell keeps Bonsai in his office. There is even one show where he's seen pruning his tree, and has real Bonsai tools (shears and concave cutter). Some props guy was paying attention! Also, I get miffed seeing Bonsai inside dark rooms like a vase. In this show, they're against a huge window in a sunlit office. The best was a large JBP (probably rented from a LA nursery), but lately they've been showing mallsai looking junipers.

Not a movie, but still a moving graphic. Pay attention to the background of this commercial, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woJArcrKMY0

Obviously staged. Not enough light for so many indoor plants. What were they advertising again?Robert J. Baran wrote:Not a movie, but still a moving graphic. Pay attention to the background of this commercial, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woJArcrKMY0

Re; Bonsai Movies
The vast majority of celluloid portrayals (http://www.phoenixbonsai.com/BoldlyGrow.html) of dwarfed potted trees are indoors with less-than-adequate lighting. What kind of education to long-term tree care is that providing? The worst offender I think is the 2003 film The In-Laws: when Dr. Jerry Peyser (Albert Brooks) is on the phone in the bathroom of Barbra Streisand's airplane, as piloted by Steve Tobias (Michael Douglas), there is a juniper in that small window-less room.
The commercial sponsors are inconsequential for our purposes here...

I wonder what the thinking is and to what demographic the movie people are trying to reach when bonsai is included into scene design.

Nothing else in the movies is real. Why should bonsai display be real? Forget it.
