Hi,

I am looking for some feedback on my Colorado Blue Spruce tree. It is about 22" tall. It has already been suggested that I shorten the jin on the right side of the tree.  I am looking forward to start delevoping the pads on the tree and may end up shortening some of the branches. This is my first attempt at styling a spruce tree.

Thanks,

Mike

That's a nice tree with great potential. One thing I noticed from the picture is that you have created bows when shaping the branches downwards. That looks good (to me) on deciduous trees; conifers tend to have very little bowed branches in nature.

But I am not recommending very sharp, gnarly turns and twists either (because that is not what the trunk suggests). Try to start bringing the branches down as soon as it leaves the trunk, and try bending in 3D space, not just up-and-down.

I am not sure what you mean by bow. This tree was collected in the high Rocky Mountains on a ranch. According to our spruce experts in our local club the branches on older trees get weighed down as they get older. The bottom branches are weighed down the most with upper branches having little. I have MS and my branch bending is pretty weak and it took all I had to bend the larger branches on this tree. Its no fun watching the muscles in your hand shrink up and get weaker.

But it is still fun to work on the trees!

Thanks,

Mike

I wouldn't worry too much about the bending of branches as long as what you do appears to be natural and created by the elements. When you depart from what a Blue does naturally it is up to you to sell it.

Maybe it's just the shadows from the flash photography, but it seems to have a few too many branches to me.

I agree some of them could be shortened and a few could be removed to eliminate bar branching, and branching on the inside of curves. Those two elements almost never make for a good design regardless of how avant gard or naturalistic your design.

Hi Jim and Vance,

Thanks for the feed back. I agree with your assestment on some of the branches being to long and bar branches. My local mentor Larry Jackel said the same thing, but to wait unitl next year and let the tree recover. I should have taken a better photo at a different level. The tree does look anything like it when I started. Should have taken a photo of it then.
