Interesting article, new clipping actually, but the references are there.
Bonsai Effect
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/11/081111102804.htm
thought it was interesting, explains a little of the actual why some of the things we do work to reduce leaf size and internode lengths.
Bad news is, there will be and yet another product on the market that farmers can spray on crops to get giant, tasteless, tough skinned GMO Franken-food.
But it also could lead to a "bonsai spray" that would automatically make miniatures.
This idea sounds like it was funded by BASF, or SANDOZ or Monsanto.

Leo,
leaves will also become smaller, from full sun, enough fertiliser, more branchlets, your soil mix and simply ageing.
My nephew's Biology book also lists Bonsai as - starved - to get the effect.
I found that when you defoliate excessively, more than once a year, the leaves may get smaller, but the density of leaf does not increase. Look at the premna examples.
I prefer, dense leafyness, and you take a scissors to thin out where you need to. This to me is a healthy bonsai.
I like the idea, that my Bonsai are healthy.
Much thanks for the article.
