Trip to Shanghai and Zuzhou
Hi IBC.
Just got back from from a week trip to Shanghai and Zuzhou
some night shots for the city slickers
NYC? Chicago?
Europe?
For the people who wanted to learn few things about scrolls and Chinise painting. go to the Shanghai museum, they have a section /huge rooms with close to a hundred displays just for the scrolls, dating back hundreds of years ago and all are well preserved. very good inspiration for bonsai designs and penjing.
here are some pictures.
how the tree behave and develop when it is near a cliff.
Weeping forest,,,this one I will do for a future project.
I been trying to copy one these "penjing" scene.
my poor attempt. I made this one last year. I am happy to see some similarity even with the rock character.
16th and 17th century furniture adorned with trees very similar to Chinese bonsais of today.
The trees are minimalist but the design is intricate
I am more interested in the the painting of the pine behind rather than the tree on the table.
Zuzhou province
these are from I.M. Pei's modern museum
very nice cascade trees drawings from a 16th c fan.
bottle with penjing painting on the interior (how on earth they did that?) made hundred of years before glass bottles was supposed to be invented..
You know I was too busy taking pictures of the museum architectural beauty and I almost forgot about the bonsai garden...when I got there it wass about to close...but I managed to take some pictures of the ancient bonsais of Zozhou
some more trees later and stones later.
regards,
jun

Re: Trip to Shanghai and Zuzhou
some more trees.
What is wonderful about these garden is that trees got different design, some are from the northern technique and some coming from the southern design.
I believe that the northern styles are more similar to that of the japanese designs and the southern designs are more of what we commonly know as Chinese style.
to be continued....

cont...
So many Chinese elm in China
Flowering section.
One of my favorite...
From a different garden...but I my whole day is not enough to cover this one.
In Zozhou bonsais are everywhere...even in the road side and ordinary park like this one.
...even in hotel lobbies,
and for the "rockers" of the IBC...
I hope you enjoy the pictures. I'll be back again in these two cities to cover more areas...my "bonsai map" says I covered only less than 10% of the bonsai areas.

Jun you are fortunate to be so close to China. Thank you for sharing your trip. That's a trip of a lifetime! Who owns most of those trees and who pays to keep them maintained? I am drooling at all of those stone benches - WOW! The rocks!

Thank you so much Jun. These scrolls from hundreds of years ago perfectly present the essence of Chinese Penjing. And the scars and hollow trunks on the trees are trying to show how bad the enviroment were where the trees grew how tough these trees are. The scrolls and the Penjings together is a great way of promoting Chinese Penjing culture.

The tree does look like a cypress variety. Robert and Pongsatorn thanks for posting again; it was great to see these trees again!
