How to thicken your trunk Empty How to thicken your trunk

I've read that there are only a few ways to get a thicker trunk on a bonsai tree. None of the ways seem very viable, considering the tree that i want to be thicker is a dawn redwood tree of about 3 years of age. Ive read that only time can make the trunk thicker, having branches that come from the base, only to be sacrificed later (which is not an option for my dawn redwood due to the lack of branches at the base), and to literally saw the trunk in half, shove a wedge in between, and use rafia (i think thats what its called) to fuse the two sections together! Are there any other options that any of you guys might now of?

A little while ago I put some of the methods used on digital paper. Have a look:

ALL methods for creating thicker trunks boil down to one thing: Time.

With a dawn redwood (how do you keep it damp enough in New Mexico?) my guess would be to just let everything grow for a few years, paying no attention to where branches are. Then, when enough time has passed and the trunk is close to where you want it, removing all the branches and starting them over, selecting the one you want and rubbing off those you don't.

ya know, im not too sure im keeping it damp enough... but im rather OCD about making sure my soil is always wet for that particular tree... Its a rather new tree that i bought off the internet, and i wasn't truly pleased with that i got! So im just making the best out of what i got! Hell, i dont even know if its doing too good to be completely honest! but i figured i'd wait till next spring to see if indeed it really needs different care!

but aside from my tangent, thanks for the advice! :-D
