Styling session with Mary Madison on buttonwood
Some of you not in Florida may not be familiar with the buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus) or with Mary Madison, the recognized Queen of Buttonwoods. She is a pillar of the bonsai community and a living legend. She honored our little study group, No-Na-Me Bonsai, by driving up to our neck of the woods and guiding us in our work with this wonderful material.
Her buttonwoods are collected in South Florida and have some of the most sought after deadwood features in bonsai. Her trees are legendary.
I showed up empty handed with every intention of purchasing one of her prized buttonwoods and I was not let down. As soon as I saw it my arm shot out and put a mighty lock on this tree to make sure no one else could get it.
I paid (dearly) for the tree. Then Mary accessed my newly acquired treasure and pointed me in the right direction. As she looked it over she half jokingly said, "You know, I debated if I should bring this tree. I was thinking of keeping it for myself." I could see why. It's still rough. Particulary the new jin/shari, but with time I hope to smooth it all out to match the wonderful, natural deadwood.
Hope you like it.
Oh, and it will eventually will be potted slightly leaning more to the right in a semi-cascade/soft windswept style.

I wish I did, but I only had my phone camera that day. I know a couple of people took photos of the whole thing, but as of yet I have not seen any.

Great to see Mary working on trees.
Great to see Mary working on trees. Mary sure is a national treasure; any of you guys got pictures of Mary's trees you can share with the members. I recall Mary presenting a Buttonwood at a BCI event many years ago... I was fascinated at the contortions and the deadwood.

There's one of hers (and others) here: http://www.theatons.com/disneys-bonsai-tree-collection-lots-of-photos
Another here: http://www.orlandobonsai.com/buttonwood.htm
And she's likely to have worked on a few (or maybe all) of these: http://www.miamitropicalbonsai.com/buttonwood_sp.htm
She doesn't appear to have her own site.

Yes, tropical they are and carefully watched over by the native 'conchs' that will toss you in the slammer if you get too friendly with them and decide to adopt one.

Hey, Ed great find; I hope you keep us updated with this guy!
BTW, I laughed when read this from your thread:
It made me remember the barbeque back in June. You selected one of my pots and placed it down on the table, holding it for later. It wasn't there for 3 minutes and SOMEONE snatched it up! I guess you learned your lesson. LOL!!

Haha, yeah, that's right. That was a sweet pot too. No, I was not going to take my hands off that tree till I paid for it.
Hey, by the way, I'm looking for a pot for this tree. I have it in one of Sigrid's old pots right now and it looks okay, but I want something custom made for it. You in?
It would be a simple round semi-cascade, medium slant, no lip, thrown foot. I drew out something very simplistic. You get the idea. What you think? I'm not sure of the size. Seven inches is a rough estimate, but I would bring you the tree to get a better idea.
Thanks,
Ed
