Hi guys

Collected a juniper. I know it as grey owl juniper. I can't post a pic yet as I am on my iPad.
It was from a parking lot that is being ripped up. The parking lot was first planted in 1972.
I have collected it at the right time of year, I got lots of fibrous roots and have planted it in a free draining mix.
I have two questions.

1.it is big and has lots of foliage, some of it way out that I will never use. Can I reduce it now or should I wait till it has recovered and growing strong?

2.where is the best place to keep it? Sun, shade or semi shade.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks
Brett

Hi Brett,
I would not cut off any foliage this year; let it recover in a shaded area. Mist the foliage regularly, if it was mine I would mist the foliage at least twice daily.
Good luck with it.

Hi Brett, my rule of thumb for Junipers has always been to remove a proportionate amount of foliage to the root mass left behind - semi shade, no wind and as Todd says, mist mist mist.

Photo please.

Hi Brett, nice material indeed. I am not an expert and was told "back in the days" that one should "always" remove foliage to compensate for cut roots. However, I have read on IBC, and met Ryan Neil and Owen Reich, who both say to leave as much foliage on Junipers, which will enable them to grow new roots ... then you can prune, after they have established themselves. More foliage equals more roots; more roots means a healthier, stronger tree.

Thanks Todd

I have been misting and at the moment it is raining.. So self misting. I am going to make sure the mix does not stay to wet. One one of the smaller ones i have removed some foliage so will see if that made any difference.
Got a few more to collect. Will keep you posted.
