Help with Douglas Fir Empty Help with Douglas Fir

Post  katydad3 Sat Aug 17, 2013 9:04 pm

A friend gave me a DouglasFir sapling (Pseudotsuga menziesii) as a gift to turn into a bonsai. I can find nothing on this species in my
bonsai library nor on the internet. Perhaps that is an indication of unsuitability, but I would like to try anyhow. The branches are very
flexible, like Spruce. Formal upright seems to be the style the tree demands. It is currently about 18 inches high (45 cm) with a 1/2 inch caliper
(1 cm).
Does anyone have any experience or advice about this species?
Thank you.

Hmmm.

That was on the first page I Googled. It was a bit sparse, but there were several other references, too.

The Yamadori I collected back in the 60"s was treated like a Spruce. It did quite well till I was drafted and lost an entire Yamidori collection.

My son found a semi cascade that sluffed off into a mountain stream that he was fishing. water washed off all the soil but I put it in ourNW mix (1/3rds pumice and volcanic rock for drainage, and one third pine bark). It went thru the ill timed potting and has prospered over the last two years. easy to wire, with little memory. I've kept it in full sun and seems not to have any issues. most Firs are straight as an arrow so was really delighted to get something non typical in it's movement. I've never shown it but get lots of comments from visitors. I use tea bags with organic fertilizer with very low numbers. I enjoy using local trees for my subjects.
