Grewia styling??? Empty Grewia styling???

Post  rrubberbandman Tue Aug 13, 2013 2:18 pm

Hello!,
Recently i picked up this grewia/lavender star flower from a local nursery for a great price.....they didnt even know what specie it was.....but anyways....i was wanting some ideas on what to do with its styling, it appears very healthy but has a few black spots that appear on outer edges of leaves in a pattern......and its current growth habit it 100% upwards....would like to create a "denser" style?

There are some pictures on the Web. Look for Lennart's Bonsai Beginnings.
One suggestion: Start with skinny branches if possible. As the tree matures, the branches thicken but the trunk doesn't. You eventually have to redo the whole thing.
Also, in the long run a larger specimen works better, even though the leaves reduce well.
For the first two years, you will not be able to show the tree in bloom and also nicely trimmed, as the flowers are on the ends of the branches. After about two years of training, it will bloom on short branches & will look very nice in a show.
Your specimen is a long drink of water. Put the tree in a big growing pot and try to thicken up the trunk. Otherwise air layer it into two shorter trees.

Good advice from Iris.

The branches do become thicker as the trunk if the growth on them is not restricted.

Beautiful flowers on the species - worth too keep them for that!
