Five year old japanese red maple!
I need to thickin the trunk up really good but I don't want the roots to be to deep if it could injure the plant by cutting them back. Help please idk what to do

Here are some thoughts on growing good trunks:

In order to get the roots to stay on the suface, people either use a growing box (Basically a very wide, but shallow box which allows only surafce roots to form) or place a non-penetratable layer below the roots in the ground, e.g., a tile at 4 inches below the soil surface.
